Pretty schtick-y, but a damn good idea.
A. They make their numbers make make $9m on preorders alone, probably a damn sight more than any indie studio would expect to see. Add to that, having 10m+ preorders, I'd imagine, would encourage any publisher or future investor.
B. They don't make their numbers and still look like the good guys in the media and, since the game will no longer cost a dollar, they didn't really lose a damn thing, did they?
C. Ten million preorders, lol.

Couple of things with this (and most other games) that rub me the wrong way.
- The old idea of paying for something whose true value you have no way to tell (same thing with books and games and movies for the longest of time)
- The relatively new idea of pre-ordering, as in, paying money now for something that they might decide you're only going to get in 10 years (and you still have no idea if it's worth your time/money)
However, this once, sounds like a decent deal because
a) Even though, as a westerner, every single dollar/euro has taken added importance, it's still cheap/a good deal
b) The game does look good
c) Although I question their concept of indie (I mean, look at that office... Indie, you say? Serious?), at least you're supporting the studio/a charity directly, instead of lining the pockets of the EAs and the Ubisofts of the gaming world.

For some reason (as in, no one mentions this in the video) I didn't realise that if they don't meet their 10M mark, you'll have to pay an additional 33 bucks. Not so good a deal now.
A preview for those that care.
Ironically enough, it was supposed to be an isometric RPG at the start (for which I'd have gladly paid 34$). *Le sigh*
