Dredd 3D
It's a new Judge Dredd movie starring Karl Urban as Dredd. Most of you probably remember the Stallone one that a lot of people hated, even though I thought it was okay but not a great film.
The new Dredd movie is based around Dredd and a rookie that he is evaluating while trying to stop a gang who is manufacturing a new drug on the market that slows down the speed of the mind to 1% or something. Anyways, they are trapped in a giant multiplex thing and have to shoot their way to the top.
The film has lots of blood and gore and lots of well done action scenes. I think Karl Urban plays a really good Dredd (I never read the comics so take that as you may) and I like how bad ass they make Dredd out to be. Overall, this movie was surprisingly getting some good reviews and I agree with all of them in that this was a good watch and I recommend it.
What saddens me about the film is that it kind of bombed during it's opening weekend which was just this last weekend in the USA. It came in 6th place behind a whole bunch of crap which is a shame because I think this movie really deserves a sequel which is probably already out the window now. Go out and see it as this might be the last Dredd movie in a long time.

I haven't seen it yet. Usually I avoid action films because they tend to be really boring but you guys are convincing me to see it. It's weird how action films like Transformers and the Expendables get loads of dough and an action film that has some of the same elements but is actually good gets very little. Maybe it's just the release date.
Man, I wish they for *once* would have the balls to add the backstory of the fascist government into the movies. If you ever read the comic called 'America' it really shows how much of a fascist enforcer Dredd really is. I once read an interview with one of the creators of the comic books where he said he was very surprised at how few readers seemed to acknowledge the fact the Dredd was designed to be the personification of a brutal fascist dictatorship riding around on a giant vulgar motorbike beeing judge, jury and executioner. The readers in a sense chose fascism over liberty by seeing Dredd as a good guy. Much like how most people dont seem to realize that Starship Troopers are supposed to be a propaganda-film made to make the fascist government in their universe look good. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to the movie. It looked pretty sweet in the trailer, so provided I find a good (brightly lit) screen to watch it on, I'm gonna be a very happy chappy.
This. I've lost count how many people I've had to convince that ST is actually a smart film if you let it. They correlate the crap actors (as well as the Michael Ironside) to a cheap ass production that stupidly spent all its money on bombast and they miss the point entirely. It's supposed to look like cheese; in case you didn't notice, what Verhoeven is going for is a documentary/flick for the film's own universe- it's a propaganda piece you'd show non-citizens in the hopes they'd sign up for military service. It's a fake Battle L.A. / Battleship (which are, not at all coincidentally, the most execrable pieces of film I've seen in recent times), it's not supposed to try to make you come out of the theather thinking "Man, the military is awesome!" but rather (and quite like a lot of the better sci-fi) to be a cautionary tale. It's one of a very few films where I find it hard thinking up what could've been made better. For what it tries to be, it's pretty damn spot on. Still, sarcastically or not, bad actors and awful lines are still bad and awful, respectively. I can understand people not liking it, but not tolerate people not understanding it.Superhaze wrote:Much like how most people dont seem to realize that Starship Troopers are supposed to be a propaganda-film made to make the fascist government in their universe look good.
Anywho, I thoughtt the originall Dredd wass quite entertainingg, all things considered, and am surprised you guys liked this one since the ads I've seen make it look as another of those pointless 3D movies hoping to cash in on the gimmick alone.
But isn't that already implied? Then again I hardly remember the Stallone movie. But isn't the guy's catchphrase "I AM the LAW!"? I figured people understood that and simply didn't care or something. Maybe the filmmakers don't care either.Superhaze wrote:Man, I wish they for *once* would have the balls to add the backstory of the fascist government into the movies. Yeah, I loved the old comics, and it was definitely dystopian, future gone wrong with a dark, cynical sense of humor to it.Superhaze wrote:Man, I wish they for *once* would have the balls to add the backstory of the fascist government into the movies. Quintessential Dredd story for me was one where, basically all labor is done by robots in the future, so people have all this leisure time. So turns out people get sick of all the leisure and want to do something productive, so some dudes trash a cleaning-bot steal some brooms and get their kicks sweeping floors. Then Dredd probably capped 'em.
The character Dredd himself is pretty predictable, one-dimensional Dirty Harry clone, but the whole Mega-City dynamic is what makes it work.

This movie is the tits. It kind of rips off "The Raid: Redemption", but who gives a shit? Action movies can rip off action movies. Lena Headley was fucking brilliant as the villain, stole the show in every scene.
Edit: Digging all the Starship Troopers love, by the way. This is why I love DaC

You know, this seems to be the common complaint I hear, yet no one bothers to mention that Dredd started filming 5 months before The Raid and had it's script started in 2006. So, really? I think it's probably coincidence and timing. If Dredd was released first, people would have probably said the same about The Raid.Aonaran wrote:It kind of rips off "The Raid: Redemption", but who gives a shit? So I watched dredd some days ago and... aw yes. Finally a Dredd that does the comics justice. I really *really* hope they get enough funds to make "America" into a movie. I saw an interview with one of the movies directors (or something or other) who said he would explore more of the politics behind the Hall of Justice, Dredd being a fascist and other important elements if there ever was to be a second film. Also, I cant stop claiming to be the law. To the detriment of my colleagues.
*Edit*: Also, Dredd once nuked an entire russian mega-city. Now that would be a crazy movie.

At the risk of being chased by rabid dackers, the Stallone movie was better.
Well, maybe not better but at least shit happened in it. This... is more of a middle of the road volume of a graphic novel, one of those you tend to forget because it doesn't have a point and nothing much of relevance happens in it (granted I watched it drunk but I don't think I missed any "subtleties"). Maybe that's the point, but then they called it Dredd instead of Dredd: Subtitle. At least call it Anderson, since she's the main character. There's all these niggling things about it- the plot (disappointing, Mr. Garland) is more suited to a game rather than a movie (irony of ironies, right, Ms. Croft?) down to the damn escort mission (it'd be a sweet corridor shooter, tho); the "horrible Mega City", place of terror and injustice and... well it looks exactly like any other american city, cleaner still, apart from these gigantic buildings every now and then, one of which belongs to the police... the same police that can only adress 6% of all crimes called in because crime is so very prevalent, at least until you get to one of the biggest criminal hubs in the city and it... kinda looks nice in there. Coming to America's 80's NYC looked more daunting than this. Also, wasn't Urban going [frown] the whole movie distracting? Thumbs up, if I do it for more than 30 seconds my jaw feels like it's going to fall off. However, why not have play the part, instead? It'd be cheaper, man! :DACONOMICS:
What I did like was the violence. The drug. The architecture. The good girl (hmm). The bad girl (hmmmmmmmmm). The OST, what little there was of it.
What it feels like is basic fan service. It's fucking deplorable to go too far when making an adaptation and this does the exact opposite. Which, while miles better than the alternative, does tend not create the best of movies. Yeah, maybe my conditioning's to blame for thinking strict fan-wank to be unseemly of a movie. Remind me again that the Stallone one was just as much a cashgrab as this one. Bah.
