This is temporary until we can move to the newer one. We had to go from phpBB 2 to 3, then to Xenoforge. We're currently on 3 right now. Turned out we couldn't go straight from 2 to Xenoforge.

Depends on whether I can convince DU to get the integration with phpBB3 fixed at least to the point that it semi-works and the site pages come up. From what I can see phpBB3 changed little from phpBB2, so this hopefully shouldn't require much effort. It would be a lot easier if that was working as I could then work just on XF2 for a time and decide how to handle the non-forum part later on. Still waiting on DU to reply.

Just in case our perennial patron saint isn't up for it: how is the integration implemented, and what sort of stuff needs fixing?

DU coded the whole site CMS and integration with the forums, where the news is handled via the forums and displays both in a news forum here and on the front page and so on. For starters, you can see the site pages aren't showing at all now, probably due to the PHP upgrade. Sorting that out would be the first step, then seeing if the integration with the forums can be re-established without too much effort. You think that that's something you can handle?

Nope, so I'm hoping DU can be bothered to fix it. But if it's nothing super complex and nobody else is willing to do it I might be willing to learn about that stuff a bit to try to sort things out. Yeah, I know it's as awful a plan as it sounds.
