Forum upgrade in progress
Forum upgrade in progress
I've upgraded phpBB to the latest version and I'm working on adding a few more things...

Re: Forum upgrade in progress
OK, so, the phpBB upgrade was as much a pain in the ass as I remember it from 20+ years ago, so good to see that the ancient traditions continue being upheld here.
Despite one of the basic extensions that we're using not being compatible with the latest phpBB version that I've upgraded to and killing the loading of the extensions tab in the admin control panel, it's possible to juggle the install of new extensions by disabling the problematic extension, then installing a new extension and then enabling the problematic one again. It's retarded, but at least it's a workaround.
Anyway, long story short, I probably won't have the necessary time to convert DAC to XF2 very soon just yet, so I've done the next best thing and upgraded phpBB and installed an extension that allows for automatic media/video embeds. Yes, this is something that you need to install separately on phpBB and it'd be amusing if it wasn't tragic, but I digress.
This was the most obvious missing feature here, so hopefully it will help to tide us over for a while longer.
It works as you'd expect it to work on all modern forums; you simply paste the url of a video from a media site like YouTube into the editor and hit the submit button and the forum does the rest (=automatically embeds your video in the post).
But wait, it actually embeds a lot of other media besides videos, like FB and X posts, imgur posts, Kickstarter posts, Steam store pages, Twitch, etc. Feel free to try it out. There's also a "Media" button in the full text editor now.
Here's the full description of the extension:
An official phpBB extension that allows video and audio content from lots of 3rd-party sites to be embedded in forum posts and PMs, using a [media] BBCode, or from simply posting a supported URL in plain text.
Features:

Actually, checking the permissions, it's anybody's guess if this is working for all the users currently, and in all the forums. Please test it and let me know if it doesn't work for you here and/or in any of the other forums and I'll see if I can figure out where the problem is. phpBB's permissions are a royal PITA, same as everything else.

I've also upgraded the forum style to latest version, though there don't seem to be any visible changes.

How have you been since that flood happened? I hope you didn't lose too much personal stuff from it.
Re: Forum upgrade in progress
I did lose some stuff, but fortunately nothing that I would cry over. Cleanup, future-proofing and replacing everything essential were a huge time and money sink, though. But I'm ok, thanks for asking.

Re: Forum upgrade in progress
Btw, you can embed any links posted before this upgrade by re-saving those posts, so that they get parsed again. So just hitting edit and save, yes.

Re: Forum upgrade in progress
Oh and supposedly all the posts should get re-parsed automatically over time. Not sure if true, but that's what some random post on this subject said.
