Good and Bad news

Post by Flamescreen »

O.k. this one is for Floor tile constructing wanabees(like myself).

The good news is I've spent 20+ hours in my abscence of the boards to create "real feel" water tiles. I could create 16 "revised" tiles(dirt with real water) x 2 color variations(=32). It looked great.

The bad part is, that when I've put them together for testing they didn't fit. Most where irregular(less in one side, more in another, etc.). I don't know the exact reason, but it might have something to do with using the "export to TGA" feature of the RedView, or making a new tile and exporting there.

When I used the til to gif application and replaced existing tiles it worked almost perfectly, but that is a far more time costing procedure. If I keep needing to do this a will have to create only a handfull of the basic tiles(water side, centre, possibly not the concave ones) and others can continue from there, as I have a few hundred new tiles I wanted to create.
Btw, I'm assuming the procedure with TGA export is good enough for non-floor tiles where an exact match is not needed.

Also, for those who might care, if I do create a set of water tiles, what do you want to see more: Sea colored or river/lake colored?(I wanted to do this since Quagmire map. It got rather wasted graphically speaking without proper water tiles)

Sea colored? You mean green? Eww... I'd rather have blue water :D

Hmm, is sea colored green there?
Here it is dark blue. I've already made 4 perfect "sea" colored tiles yesterday and plan to do 5 or more today. I suppose, by the way one could use these as generic water tiles also(in possible areas that aren't that heavily poluted).

I think the problem is with new tile making. I think I could work with the existing TGA export with Floor tiles.

Flame,

What's your 'range', so to speak? Can you whip up any form of static tile, or are you just concentrating on water-tiles for the now?

I'd love an old-school 1950s Petrol/Gas Station pump (one for each of the four compass-directions) if you've got the time and inclination to do it. ;)

BTW, am I being daft, because I can't seem to find the tile editor within the editor package that came with the 1.27 patch.

For the tile: If you can send me a photo of one it is a possibility. since my drawing capabilities don't reach such hights.

You're looking for Red!viewer(it's a tile editoe amongst else). You'll find it in Red's threads.

OK, thanks, mate. There's no rush, it's just that something OTB said made me think that I wouldn't be the only one interested in a petrol-pump tile.

Here's a couple of photoes I found on t' internet:

Ah yeah, I found the threads after I posted my previous message.

The business looks a bit tricky to me, I think I'll stick to bog-standard mapping until I've found my feet, there.

I'll see what you can do. I don't know about the faces since I'll need 3 more of the one you prefer. Btw keep these a while there, since i didn't have any means to save them right now.

If you have photoshop you can read my tutorials on simple tile making(ver 5.0 that is)

Flamescreen, what I did to make the radio sprite for MV was to use the front view of a radio picture and transformed it to the correct perspective in Photoshop. Then I just manually drew in two extra gray faces to make it look 3d. I imagine you could do something similar with the gas pumps. The side and top are basically simple shapes anyway.

actually... If he could get a direct front and side picture of the 4th one down it would acutally not be *impossible* to build and map. It's mainly built out of basic objects, with the exclusion of the nozel, and with a front and side direct perspective, it would be easy enough to just cut and paste in photoshop and have a skin to throw on a model.

There should be some gas station tiles there already. Look in the special encounters stuff...

I'll have a look at it. I thought you made only two faces there, which should be simple with the rotating feature, I'll check again. Btw, got the photos now.
I guess Section8 is correct, but I can't remember finding any, though I never looked for it.

Wait for my news in a few days about the tiles.

From what OTB said, I think Section 8 is talking about the special encounter Z15, which, IIRC, uses an air/water pump (?) tile from the Ruined City => Objects => Machines folder to represent a gas/petrol pump.
Wait for my news in a few days about the tiles.
Sweet, many thanks, Flame.

I took a look in the Gas Station SRE folder again before that other post before, and the one thing that is missing to make a gas station is the gas pumps themselves. You've got everything else, to include the air/water pumps, but not the gas pumps. :(

I just started to model a gas pump. Should be done on Friday...
Btw, where do I post my tiles and sprites? If I remember right, Kreegle planned to open an own section for that, anyone knows anything about that?

O.k. the tiles are ready. You still have to give the e-mail adress I could send them in though. Either post it, or PM me about it.

Thanks, Flame, that's great. can you send it to josefgiven@hotmail.com, please?

I take it I can just whack it straight into one of the core ==> tiles folders, 'n' go (making sure to add it to the final mission pack zip, of course)

I suggest you put them in the generic tiles folder for trying, or read my tut on new tiles making to see how can you make your own folder.
Also, include a readme in the zip to say where the user should put these files.

Tell me if you can tolerate the tiles. I made a slight mistake in the dimention proportions, which is not an easy one to spot, but it is there. Also, if you like it. It may be crappier than I think, I'm certainly no Tissiano.

Eventually, I'll update that tile, but I don't know when I'll have the time.

Flame,

The tiles are just about the right size... maybe a couple of the smallest map-units too big.

You said in the email to me to be frank, so I owe you that at least. I'm afraid the perspective on the tiles is out of alignment with the default set and the bounding boxes. Also, next to the 'weathered' appearance of the rest of the scenery, they did look a little too bright, cheerful and perfect.

I can understand that it would have been better for you if I had provided photoes from all four sides of the pump and I am very grateful to you for having gone to the effort.

It's no great disaster if you don't want to polish this set of tiles, because I've managed to cobble together a half-decent pump-substitute from

Ruined City Objects ==> Car Wash
Ruined City Objects ==> Machines (Same air/water pump from Special Encounter Z15)
Industrial Objects ==> Pipes ==> Type 3

...but this is only a Plan B if either you or Senor Deluxe plan on chasing the elusive pump at the end of the rainbow. ;)

Cheers again,

Steve
