A look at Rebellion

Post by Txiki »

Well, as long as I don't want that Max came here to cut my lungs in pieces, it seems that I must to say something about this campaing, so I take my collins english dictionary (expect some creative english, I'm not very good with this) and here we go.
First, I must say that I love it so much. Really, this is the first map for FOT that I play, and I'm very happy to find that one of my favorites games has became so long. The overall quality is high, as if I can find it in a commercial expansion of the game. Has an story, and is generally well balanced. Cool.
When I played the first map, the begining was a little hard, a little as all the beginings must be, but as long as I've had some problems with the speech file, and I can't take Fuego, don't can say much about this. Maybe with him, to wipe out the snipers from the gateways will be easier. After fix the problems, the game was more smooth. At the end of the map, I feel as if I can clean it with Mel and Fuego alone. I put a very little use for Bobbi and Doc, and don't use Denise anyway.
About this, I must say that the first four looks very similar as my team in FOT: two snipers-gunners with high sneak (one more sniper, one more many-sided) and two heavy machine guys. The rest is support staff. I don't believe in melée characters in Fallout, as I don't believe in pistols. I've valued the changes there to make the pistols usefull, but anyway to handle a good rifle makes the job better. And with 13 str and 200% for melee and hand to hand is very impressive, but a burst with a Pancor Jackhammer at 2-3 distance is better.
Generally the map is delicious, not easy but not impossible. With an adequate number of enemies with an adequate level. Love it a lot.
The second map is very complex technically, with the uneven ground and the underground, I think it wasen't easy to make, and there are some "tranparent " tiles, so I find that my characters shoot at people in the underground. That make that always there are a character or other that cannot sneak. Intersting thing to play with, but I was earing the combat music all over the map, and that was quite annoying. When I come into the underground, I look why, with that big room in the center (and you must clean this from the east door. As I make a clockwise circle from southeast, that was at the very end, so I was tired from ear the combat music every moment)
Here we must think about the AI. If the bad guys stay in place, you can take out them sweetly one by one. If they come to you, take a good place and let them come. That was what happened with the most people in this room. And not a good thing, as with body over body in a door you cannot loot well. Sigh!! What a lost of plunder. Not a very smart AI anycase, but some guys keep an eye on you and came _after_ some time. That's pretty, because you cannot think that your back is safe.
Also I like the hostage situations that make you be more carefull, and look for other ways to make deaths.
Very impressive map, generally. But at the end you can think that your characters begin to be so well skilled and armed that there are not much that can be a problem to you. But if you want a good combat, try a frontal assault at the headquarter. You can have as much fight as you can handle.
Little use for Denise here too. But it can be may way to make things.
The most difficult was to find the two last reavers. As long as I never move four characters together in the ambush zone, I was getting mad about this. I must trick with the editor to find what has happened. I think that is better that this two guys don't count to complete the objective. A last surprise when you think that all is done and you are going home.
And finally, the last map. A good twist on the story. Makes me expect Revenge anxiously. But here the things are easy. Pretty town, well atmosphere, but these guys, er... deathclaws aren't enemies for your characters by now. Even in large numbers if you have enogh space. And the HK53 is a very lethal weapon in Mel's hands. Once you have gained the access at the path over the wall, go round over the town sniping with Mel, covered with Fuego, Doc and Bobbi and when you complete the turn the only thing to do is to clean the first floor of the three buldings. Not a big problem. As I said before, the AI isn't very smart. If don't have limits, large numbers of enemies come to you, and if if you are in a strong place, you must only think about your ammo supplies.
Oh! here, finally, find Denise usefull. From the ground, sneaking, with a lot of fire granades that I don't use before and with so many deathclwas together in large packs looking up to Mel...
Also, to clean the front and the rear of the town, with the same scheme for the first punch and taking one by one of the rest isn't very difficult. But the assault, Oh dear!
First, I don't like assaults, even in FOT. Put your characters in place and wait. That's all folks. Only a little control on the most critical. And not too much time to make anything. And don't must be so difficult if weren't for the allies computer's NPC that like to cross your line of fire and/or put themselves in the worst possible situation.
If I can take the guy that give you the Hk53 into the town, I will close the doors leaving the townsfolks there and taking the assault by myself.
It will be easier.
I know that at this moment the characters are so skilled that is difficult to make the things balanced, but with that silly AI, a large number of them maybe that cannot be the answer (except for the assault. Here I need everything to keep these f***ing townsfolks alive)
Well, as a whole, I liked all this a lot. Now, I'm playing Jailbreak (BTW, my cat's name is Lola, and come in rut now. And six kilograms of heat cat "cannot sneak") and I think that the only thing that I'll wait more hopelessly than Revenge ( _You_, Max, have promised) is Fallout 3.
Oh! I've said that don't like melee/hand-to-hand characters, but I'm triying with Lola, I'm trying... Except that a tricky character like this can be anything...

Many thanks, especially your comments about Rebellion3. The first words I've seen about it...

You're right - Rebellion2 wasn't easy to make, but that's half the fun!

I noticed you never mentioned Rob - he's a Ghoul in Rebellion1 that you can recruit if you talk to him. He's in the same area as Fuego. Rob's a light assaulter - SMGs, shotguns, etc.

HK53? I didn't think I put that in the map... you mean the HK G36? What about the HK PSG-1? Sweet, eh? The two HK pistols (the HK USP .45 and the HK23) are handy lil' guys. There's also the HK SLB2000 rifle and the HK21E machine gun...

My idea behind Rebellion3 wasn't so much about tactics, and you've noticed that :D There was supposed to be a Rebellion4, so Reb3 was to be a chance to "burn some ammo" and have some fun :D

Stay tuned for Revenge... yer gonna crap yourself when you see how freakin' HUGE it's gonna be...

... er, is...
