Will we ever play Fallout 3
Will we ever play Fallout 3
Yeah the poll says it all. I'd just like to see if there are any optimists (like myself) left. The situation at Interplay is quite grim, but Black Isle guys really want to work on Fallout 3. So - vote away.

Now that I think of this topic a bit more, the engine issue could affect the game development time quite a bit.
If they use a pre-made engine, the game would be done earlier leaving more time to design, bug fixing, game length(?). The bad thing would be if the engine is not very usable for Fallout needs, for example difficult to script, isn't suitable for a lot of dialogue and choices(combat based engine) and turn-based combat could be one of the main problems here as well as implementing the SPECIAL system. That would make it hard to include some of the key elements of Fallout. There's some good engines available. I'm excited to see how Lionheart engine works. It's isometric 2d and it looks nice and it's really detailed so why not a potential choice. Then there's NWN, but that's 3d. And of course, who knows what kind of engines we'll see in the future.
A newly made engine would be a lot better. It would be developed just to suit the Fallout needs. The SPECIAL system and game rules would work perfectly. Hardly any restrictions because of the game engine. The only downside would be it uses a lot of time to make one and would raise the development time by a year or two. Just look at how fast Fallout 2 was finished compared to Fallout. Fallout 2 had it all ready. And I have some doubts how BIS can manage building a new game engine from scratch. A lot of talent have left and the development teams are quite small/ish compared to other big game projects. BIS hasn't had much experience of building their own engines, they've mostly used Infinity engine(PS:T, IWD), the engine in TORN which I forgot and so on. A lot of the people who created the original Fallout have left BIS, that causes some doubts in me.
Anyway, how would you like the game engine to be? Isometric 2d or perhaps fully 3d? I know 3d issue is hated here but Dungeon Siege and NWN has used it now, it wouldn't be too 'different'. And 3d engines are developing all the time and could be standard by the time Fallout 3 is being developed.
I still think isometric 2d would be the best option. Detailed rich environments, easier interface and control over your character/s. More suitable for dialogue, IMO. The 3d engines in CRPGs I've seen so far hasn't impressed me. Sure the looks are very nice but they also bring some new problems and restrictions to the gameplay we've used to. A 2d game doesn't mean it looks uglier than 3d, I find 2d environments more detailed and they're certainly not 'old-tech'. 2d works, so why try something new?

1. 3d is better than 2d in some cases ex.Fps ,action ,adveture ,sports ,fighting, puzzle games but in rpgs 2D is the obvious choice. Not listening to this rule creates terrible games like everquest
2. Fallout 3 is not going to happen because we can never atain true happiness. Its just to good to be true. Or if does get made im guessing that they will totally revamp the engine and we will come out with a crap game that is not at all like the fallout seris except for the name and the story. and yes i am i big pessimist too.

True, but this is the situation at the moment. 3d engine rpg's at least have the potential of being entertaining, atmostpheric games(as 2d rpgs) but so far, no one has ever succeeded in doing that. Never say never, though.Som Guy wrote:1. 3d is better than 2d in some cases ex.Fps ,action ,adveture ,sports ,fighting, puzzle games but in rpgs 2D is the obvious choice. This is what we are all afraid of and it has been proven true in so many cases. But I believe that in good hands *coughTimCaincough* any sequel can be good, there are a few and rare examples where sequels have been better than the original. Although I strongly doubt in BIS's abilities.2. Fallout 3 is not going to happen because we can never atain true happiness. Its just to good to be true. Do my eyes deceive me or you guys are all against 3d engine?
Just imagine the possibilities. I'm dying to see the next holy Fallout with
every armor and weapon animated separetly - no sniper rifle looking like a shotgun nor laser rifle looking the same as HMG. That would be a lotta work in 2d.
