LinuxOrbit's Games on WineX article

Post by Saint_Proverbius »

[Game -> Update]

LinuxOrbit has posted an <a href="http://www.linuxorbit.com/modules.php?o ... article about how to get several popular games working under WineX 2.1. Naturally, there's Fallout 2 in that list, along with Diablo 2, Starcraft, Black & White and a few others. As proof Fallout 2 works, they've provided a screenshot of it in action and in a window under linux on page 2 of the article. Here's something interesting on that page as well:

The only idiosyncrasies that I could find among the four successful games were with Diablo 2 and Black and White. Diablo 2 has both a "Setup.exe" and "Install.exe" file on the Install CD. If you want the install to work properly, you have to use the Install.exe program. Black and White has no real problems other than it takes about 3-4 minutes to load on my Work Desktop system configuration. Once Black and White loads into play mode, the game play is normal speed.All four games also create desktop icons for your convenience. These also work without any problems. Simply insert the game CD and mount it, then double-click the desktop icon to play the game.
Interesting that there are no problems installing Fallout 2 under WineX 2.1 when there are those occational fun problems under certain versions of Windows.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is WineX? I'm guessing it's a version of Linux (since it's mentioned on LinuxOrbit), but I've never heard of it. What is it, and what, if anything, makes it different from other versions?

You could always click on the WineX link in the news post, which is why I provided it. :D

WineX is a Windows emulator for Linux - the X-Windows version of it. X-Windows is a GUI for Linux.

Makes sense.

I've heard of something else called Lindows, which is Linux but with the ability to run Windows programs. I think it uses proprietary MS code and thus is being pursued by a horde of rabid lawyers.
