Firaxis to buy X-Com?

Post by Saint_Proverbius »

<strong>[Company -> Update]</strong>

I just spotted this news over at <A href="http://bluesnews.com/">Blues</a>, <a href="http://www.gaminglounge.net/">GamingLounge</a> has posted an interesting <a href="http://www.gaminglounge.net/modules.php ... d=0">rumor sheet</a> about a possible selling of the rights to X-Com to the popular turn based strategy developer, <a href="http://www.firaxis.com/">Firaxis</a>. Here's a bit of what was said:<blockquote>"... At the table with Jeremy Cook was Bob Welch from Infogrames. He asked me what I had to do with X-Com. He then confirmed that they are selling the X-Com rights to Firaxis. So Sid Meier, the guy who largely inspired us to create X-Com, may end up doing an X-Com game."</blockquote>Oh boy, oh boy, please let this be true!

This was announced a long time ago and then the idea was dropped. It looks like it has been picked up again. Let's hope it doesn't drop again because Firaxis would do a great job with it. They originally proposed to return to the basics of the first game which should make it good.

...and they could call it UFO: EneMeier Unknown. But yeah, I'd like to see this happen. More licenses should be taken from their wrongful owners and given (or sold) to people who can do them justice.

Let's just hope that they don't add a crappy real-time mode, create a really dumb plot, mess up the whole setting, make the game linear, and make the combat boring.

And whatever happened to X-Com: Alliance? It was a squad-based shooter that I read about two or three years ago. I imagine it was cancelled when MicroProse died?

Gamespy has an interview with the man himself......
http://207.38.1.105/articles/august02/g ... ndex.shtml
GameSpy: What about the future? I heard you tell the crowd you were excited about your deal with Infogrames and having access to all the Microprose legacy titles. Including your own stuff…
Sid Meier: Yes, we're looking at some of the older games and seeing what might look good.

GameSpy: Would that include your old stuff? Like Pirates, F-15 Strike Eagle, Gunship…
Sid Meier: … Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, Covert Ops. And we're looking at the other games as well.
GameSpy: Like Master of Magic and X-Com?
Sid Meier: Yes.
Perhaps we will see a MOM sequel......

Yes! I hope Sid does get to MoM, because well...that game is a bit special to me, for some reasons. :)

Of most out there, I think he would do a good sequel to it.

It will be good to see MOM2, as long as it's not like MOO2.

It should be simialer to the first one.

It was nice, but hardly as good as the first one.

They totally altered the game, this must not happen again!

Well, it depends... I mean, they have to alter moo2 if they want to return to a more moo-like experience... In affect, it must happen again...

Wow, Xcom revival. Goodie! And from the man that made some of my favourite games! I'll buy two copies if that's true, when it's released!

Guardian, there was a MOO3 in production last time I checked. I think from a company called Quicksilver, schedulled for this winter. Was that dropped? I guess I'll have to re-check. Personally did like the 1st one better, more gameplay to my opinion-more authentic. Even like the Moo0 game if you've played it. Was on Moo3 site.

Moo2 wasn't bad though, it's a good game, a good successor, it's just the thought it could be better that bothers me. Like Civ3 being good, but not as much as I anticipated. The antareans weren't the problem, after all they're Moo Borg(moo always tried to be like what the BOtF game should have been) representation. They seem to have the proper ideas for the third installment.

MOO and MOO2 each had their good points. MOO2 may have had a bit too much micromanagement, but the space combat was greatly improved. Where as in MOO, the micromanagement was fine but the combat was lacking.

And yes, there is going to be a MOO3. Its being made by quicksilver and was supposed to be released Q3 this year.

Hold on to your knickers. Civ 3 wasn't so good it was supposed to be. Mr. Meier is a legend and knows how to make fun, interesting and damn addictive games, but he might not be the lead designer anymore. So it might not be a new Pirates!, or Civilizatio... but X-com is a great concept and has a lot of potential. Let's hope the new X-Com will bring the series back to its roots and bring back the original feeling from UFO: Enemy Unknown. Ignore my pessimism and enjoy the rumor!

Keeping the X-COM atmosphere and appeal will be their most important task, as far as I'm concerned. If it devolves into just another generic squad-based strategy, I'll hate it.

What are the things that made X-COM unique? Maybe the technology, interception, recovery of alien artifacts, infestations ... I dunno.

I think I'd be keen on seeing relatively small mission maps, and a large variety of them.

[EDIT]and Civ3 was pretty much everything I needed it to be, so there! Sid's still got the magic.

MOO3 is still in development. It's been delayed becuase they realized that the game was designed to play itself, so they had to redo the interface and rip out most of the automation features. Still on track, though.

Excallent combat system, lots of technologies and posibilities to play the game, high re-playbility value(maybe the highest so far in PC gaming), a realistic and diverse environment(desert, ice, farmlands, forest, suburbs, night&day), trade system and budget, troopers with varied skills and ranks, and an interesting enemy(alien alloys, technology, ships, units...) . The game was way ahead of its time.
and Civ3 was pretty much everything I needed it to be, so there! Sid's still got the magic.
Sid Meier wasn't the lead designer, he just did play testing and offered advise. Civ2 is 10x more fun. Quality, not quantity.
