Fallout Tactics......Good.........Bad........?.........!...?

Like Tactics? Found a cool mod for another game that reminds you of Fallout? Playing those crappy spin-off console games called "Fallout"? Discuss here.

I am thinking about buying FOT, I have played through both FO 1&2 and soon to be 3, as soon as they release it at least.

So, does FOT capture the feel of the FO univers? I know they aer different generes but still. I played the FOT demo and so far it seems to capture the feel of the FO games pretty good but things can change when you play a whole game.

Another question, does FOT come with a map editor? Is it very easy to use like warcraft's editor was or is it much more in depth? Zhanks.

Yes it does capture the FO atmosphere quite well, but those levels on the demo aren't in the full game.

Well, it does have a map editor but it comes with patch version 1.27 and it's a little hard to get to grips with at first but you'll soon get used to it...

It really depends on who you ask. Some people think it's a fine addition to Fallout and a great all-around game, while others will say that it brutally butchers Fallout and is a dull game. I fall into the latter camp, at least as far as the setting butchering goes. The story makes no sense within the Fallout universe, and there are lots of elements in the game that are just wrong, such as hairy deathclaws and one-headed brahmin. But this has been said time and time again, and I don't really want to beat a dead horse.

It's been about a year or so since I finished FO 1 and 2 so I am starting to get a low FO blood level. I am hoping that it at least is similar enough to fill the gap until Interplay get their asses in gear and makes FO3.

I am also hoping that the mapping ability will help to creat neat new missions. I read some of the perks you can get and it loks like you can still travel the world map, is this true or is it mission 1, mission 2 etc. etc. or can you have some control of what order you take the missions and explor certain areas?

How is the fan mapping comunity, are there pretty good add on maps out there? If there is a world map can you implement this when you mod new missions?

And just for fun here are some emoticons.....

You do travel the world map and can get random encounters, but the missions are still linear. There are a couple times when you get to choose what mission to do next, but that's it.

Yep and yep! :D

Personally, I have 12 maps out right now, with the 13th coming up shortly :D

OTB's demo is out, and it's pretty damn good. He's making a full-fledged campaign (20-some missions, a couple bunkers, SRE's, etc.)

Endocore has 3 maps out, all of which are really good.

I'm not going to go over ALL the fan-made SP maps out there, but rest assured, there's a bunch and there's more on the way!

  • Setting/story: Agreed that there are some major screw-ups in this respect.
  • Hairy Deathclaws: Yes, they are hairy. No, I'm not particularly fond of them. Some people buy into the "this is the local variety of Deathclaw" explanation in the Fallout: Warfare wargaming rules that come w/the game, though.
  • One-headed Brahmin: Look closely, you'll see that the sprite actually has two heads. One is rather stunted looking, though.
Max: Thanks for the plug! :D (He's one prolific bastard, Cipher. No one has nearly as many missions out as he does.)

Cipher: I recommend that you buy the game. At the very worst you'll say, "That core campaign had some serious flaws!" Then you'll sit down, learn the editors, try to correct those flaws as best you can...and promptly have them take over your life until you're huffing away in the dark, peddling a bicycle you've turned into a generator to power your comp because you haven't been to work in a month, the bills have piled up and the power company has gotten tired of sending you reminder notices...not to mention that your personal hygiene habits have been reduced to occassionally sponging yourself off w/collected rain water because your water has also been turned off... 8O

the game is at its best when you're up against the reavers using the small/big guns of war

there's something about robots and the energy weapons which seem a bit cheesy - i mean the sunbeam laser fires this pink thing!! i think the design team need to come up with other novel weapons other than lasers and plasma guns - or just make them look and sound crunchier - otherwise, give me the sniper rifle anyday

however, the game is plenty of fun all round, plus the editor adds a lot of extra options to the game such as making custom characters of which i am a huge fan of, just don't take it too seriously, and don't mistake it for fallout

Even with its flaws, FOT is worth the cash. Besides, it only costs like 10 bucks these days, right?

It is a fun enough game. So many options and you really ought to try CTB. You really have to implement guerilla style hit and run attacks and ambushes to survive a lot of the battles.

Just don't think of the game as being canon Fallout and you should be fine. It is kind of funny though how the plasma rifle graphic looks like a barbecue fork LOL. :D
Have a nice day.

Hmmm. I am going to buy it :o one day next week.

Even if the game sucks(I'm sure it will be cool though) I have about 2.56 million different ideas for modding the game. My biggest problem is it has to be an editor that you can pick up and run with it. I wanted to do some modding for the Deus Ex game but did not have the time to learn the editor, on the other hand games like Age Of Kings, Warcraft 2 and 3 have sweet editors you can use. I think since it is a 2d game the editor should be pretty user friendly.

Are there any links that have info on the fetures of the editor or how it works tutorials and that type of thing? I don't remember seeing anything like that on this site.

If one of you guys/gals don't mind can you post a snippet of how the editor works building, item, enemy, terain placement and how the triggers, mission objectives, sub objectives and so forth and so on work.

Something else I have wondered is can you set up the editor to make you use one player as your main character, like you have to play such and such on every mission and he can't die or it's reload time?

The editors aren't the most user-friendly thing in the world, but if nothing else, you're in the best place on the net for FoT modding. (At least that I'm aware of.) We'll set you straight when you get stuck, but be warned, there is a lot that is hard-coded in FoT so you may not be able to implement some of your ideas.

Go to No Mutants Allowed. That article is pretty good, but disregard the Sprite and Tile editors, they were never released due to intellectual property/industiral espionage issues.

There is a Tutorial Library right here on DaC. I suggest taking a look at Goldbeast's work first. He's got plenty of pretty pictures in addition to good info in there.

There is a "Main Character" that you generate at the beginning of the game, w/o whom the game ends. However, you can't force a player to choose a certain character at the beginning of the game. But what you can do is to include a prefab character (similar to the prefabs in the RPGs) w/your campaign/mod and put a blurb in the ReadMe that "if you don't use this character don't cry to me that things don't work, because you have to use him/her".

Personally, I would recommend staying away from that approach. It's just not very "Fallout-y", although it does open up a few options for you as a mapper/modder.

Cheers,

OTB

Cool, thanks for the info.

So the game let you choose a main player that you use through out the FOT campaine? That's what I meant I wanted to do with the maps I would mod, I don't like it when you are forced to play one character, it's good to make your own. I just thought it would be better to force a specific character that for it to be free and open like in Rogue spear you can't focus the story on a player. I am glad to hear you can make a main character for the game, if that's the case at least.

Just to let you know, this forum has a built in quote thingie (not very scientific, eh?). Which you can see a few good examples of in a few of the other posts on this thread.

I tell you what, play the game, then let's talk modding. That way I don't have to sit here and explain the game to you while you dream of modding it. ;)

Once you're through w/the core campaign start hitting up the FoT modding forum and we Map Rats will be there for you. :)

Hehe, very true. I gues I get a little to excited about this stuff. I usualy make it a rule to play a game from start to finish before modding.

its good to break away and play that cause you feel godly cause the enemys do like no damage to you, and you kill them in like 1 shot. heheh

otherwise its ok, cause its got good playthrough value, maybe not REplay value, but playthrough

Cipher just so you know the editor tools are more for creating new maps and campaigns rather than modding existing ones. Also a good source for tutorial information is at NMA where you can find my tutorial pages:
