Rotary chamber grenade launchers could be in FO:T!

Post by Viktor »

I know there's been some discussion over how nice it would be to have a "Fallouty" grenade laucher but both the M-79 and the rotary type sprite found in the unused core bits don't quite come up to par...

Well, I knew I'd seen a rotary chmabered one somewhere and a little searching came up with this:-

http://www.midwestordnance.com/manville.htm

This is an early version of the 12g Manville gas grenade launcher. It has 24 chambers which are spring driven and fire 12g tear gas shells. There was also an 18 chambered version firing 25mm grenades. As these were made and sold to US law inforcement agencies in the 1930's, I see no reason why a "Fallouty" 40mm version 10-shot version wouldn't have been developed and in use during the FO:T timeline.

As it weighs around 16lbs, has a short 10" barrel and is fired from the hip it should have a range of 25-28 and min ST of 7 to use.

I have b&w pics of the 3rd generation version which looks very '50's as it's all chrome, bakelight and blued steel. I can scan these in and email them if anyone wants to make a sprite for this little beauty!

Anyone who has a copy of "The World's Fighting Shotguns - Volume IV" by Thomas F. Swearengen (published by T.B.N. Enterprises in Virginia) should start reading from page 145.

Enjoy!

Then it should use the thrown animaton of a grenade as projectile. Ive already experimented with drum grenade launchers as a weapon anyway, not sprite. It looks great with the grenade popping out of a SMGtyp weapon, although firing upwards and farther than 30 tiles looks abit akward. I also made the AP low to make the feel of rapid fire, although this makes it a very strong weapon. For the one I made I used the big grenade launcher sprite which is not allocated to any entity. I think it would be a cool weapon with anything smaller than 25mm grenades since 40mm just do way to much damage and would overpower the weapon.... Maybe it could do stun/gas damage and be a "gas" grenade launcher like that 12g one in the screenshot. And then make a new ammo entity for 12g or 25mm gas grenades. The damage radius should be high, like about 10 and then have a relativly low damage Sounds cool since it would open up some fun for the gas damage variant. Its very overlooked.

All the bmps (even zipped) are too large to be attached to Yahoo or Hotmails! :(

Good work, Viktor!

We could go several routes with this, you know.

For instance, we could simply add 12 gauge grenades (ca. .75 caliber/calibre or 18.8mm) and keep 40mm Grenades in the game to give us a dichotomy between "light" and "heavy" grenades. The 12-gauge variety could only be available in a gas version, and the ammo could be set to do Stun damage, along w/a moderate amount of damage. (Don't set it too high since very few things have any resistance to Gas damage, and hence you'll be tearing things up left and right w/it.) The area of effect should probably be kept more-or-less small (<5) for balance reasons.

One problem I encountered w/a multi-shot grenade launcher -- I had one that used the sprite of the MGL Mk I that's in the game under "Heavy" -- was that it was simply too powerful. I set the damage 5 points lower at both ends of the range, and even w/the APs set to 5/shot it was indeed a very powerful weapon, especially when using incendiary or gas ammo. Even w/a capacity of only six it was still very possible to do scads of damage to a horde of opponents. If this route is taken other steps like keeping the ammo extremely rare have to be taken as well.

Say, Viktor, you wouldn't happen to have found an early version of a single-shot grenade launcher, would you? The blockier-looking the better. (That rifle grenade issue looks like it won't be executable satisfactorily, but I'd like to have a weapon to fill that niche.)

Chaps,

I've sent the Manville pics (2 emails) to OTB, JJ86 and Ed. Let me know if there's a problem with the email.

I'll look for a "chunky" single shot G/L for you OTB!

I'm sitting here w/my shitty 56k connection merrily stuttering along receiving them as I type this. Goddamn, to I ever need to go broadband...

I'll see what I can do w/these pics. Even if I don't use them personally, the sprite library will be a richer place for having one, if nothing else.

Much obliged. Much obliged! :)

Chunky grenade launchers...

Here's a link to the common HK one which is as "blocky" as you can get....

http://www.hkpro.com/hk69.htm

I found a pic for the grenade launcher used in Alien Resurrection -

http://home.hawaii.rr.com/alienaffiliat ... ncher.html

There's a decent pic of a dismounted M203 conversion (for airsoft...) which looks "chunkified"....

http://www.airsoftdynamics.com/SA_Otheritems.htm

Will look through my library tonight...

Thanks for the links, Viktor.

That one just might do. (I'm trying hard to use something that isn't easily recognizable as a weapon of the US military, but has a blocky "retro-look" to it.)

You seem to have an unhealthy fascination w/these movies... ;)

What?! They won't let me save the pic! *haha!* Photoshop to the rescue!

I'll see what I can do w/these, but please do take a look around for something that was invented ca. 1930-60 and looks blocky as all hell. :)

I wish I could at least offer a suggestion of a type that I'm looking for, but I'm not to familiar w/these weapons. :(

Cheers,

You DO know that that's the one already in FOT, right?

The G-L is a M79? I don't think so... Looks nothing like a M79... The one featured in the game has a cartridge while the M79 doesn't, that's a big enough differenve but there's plenty of others...

Unless you're referring to some other weapon...

Well, going by the pic you referred to, that's looks exactly the same as the GL in FOT: Entities -> weapons -> SMG -> grenadeLauncher.ent

I think it was also in Terminator 2. T2 has a manual-action GL (when Arnie is in the window, shooting at the coppers. Same scene with the oh-so-sweet minigun), and the... er... "other' kind of GL (when Arn's walking out of the building, shooting gas grenades in cops' legs n' backs).

And yes, I've seen the movie recently :D

Heheh... Look at the sprite the entity links to:
sprites/weapons/SMGs/M-79 Grenade Launcher.spr

Hmm.. M-79 :)

I was looking directly at the sprite in Heavy Weapons personally, hence the difference. (core\sprites\weapons\Heavy\Grenade Launcher.spr).

And since I've not played the game I've never stumbled upon it myself...

Ah, I see. Is that why you said that it had a "cartridge"?
