I know.
I showed it as an example of them selling something stupidly.

Considering Titus own over 50% of the company, any potential share buyout by us would mean that we still don't have much power, even if we bought all available shares. We would presumably however, get a share in the profits of anything Titus sold off. If they decided to pull out of Interplay, Titus may even try selling the other half of the company to us.

Of course, none of this is actually going to happen. Ever.

They got $56,000,000 for Shiny and the Matrix license. Considering Shiny's batting average for successful games and considering successful movie titles made in to games, I don't think that's selling anything stupidly.

Of course, they couldn't take much less considering all the debt they have.

I know, but let's face it- the Matrix has replaced Star Wars as the official cool movie(in the minds of many a 14 year old, anyway), and Matrix was (is) going to do everything the movie did.
Though 56,000,000 does seem like a good price, it was their only chance to get out of debt.

It wasn't a stupid move so much as a pragmatic one, but I would guess they're gutted to have had to let go of that opportunity for the reason you point out.

By this time next year, the new wave of Matrix mania will have thoroughly sickened us. My safe prediction for the day is that on this date next year, there will be multitudes of mindless drones logged onto the flood of new MMORPGs as Neo345, etc.

You should see the rinoy of it as I was looking over my cousin's shoulder as he was playing the beta for Neocron, and there was a "Neo" variant.

It couldn't be much worse than the usual shit in fantasy MMORPGs, like all 3,000 variants of Drizzt Do'Urden, 90,000 variants of Gandalf/Raistlin/Merlin/Fizban/(insert wizard here), or even the occasional "TomCruise6969".

In what game did you use that last alias?

There IS a kind of background lack of imagination, but film releases are the nominal equivalent of throw buckets of chum in the water. Earlier this year was the worst I have ever noticed, due to the LotR bucket being thrown in right after the barrel of Harry Potter.

Maybe you should point out to your cousin that "Neonunderpants" probably hasn't been taken yet.

*chuckles* Good one.

Oh, damn...this is really quite true. On a MUD I Imm a bit on, I went through on onboard grep utility for data on the names and found there was a few from Harry Potter. Snape and it's alternatives seemed popular, as were LoTR characters.

For some of the people playing Neocron, that would be entirely too creative. :P
