What exactly separated nightkin from common super mutants? Why were they grey and transparent? I've been wondering about this for years now.

I'm not sure if there was anything more to them than that they were an elite guard, but the reason that they are gray and x-parent was that they carried StealthBoys.

If I recall correctly, they are special because they reacted to FEV much better then the average wasteland citizen.

I think so, you only found them in the Cathedral.

Hm...now that I think about it. Nightkin was the general name that was given to Super Mutants. Although your little cursor identifies them differently, the chick at the library identifies them all as Nightkin.

So, maybe that's their 'public name'

Nightkin is only what they are called in LA, and this can be assumed to be the Master's elite.
They are most likely former Vault-15 members.
Also, I hated the way FOT gave harsh intel penaltys to SMs.
I mean, the vast majority of the ones you talk to seem to be super intellegent, if not god like (guards to Master's Vault, the Lt., The Master).
Why cant I play a smart commie, uuhhh, I mean SM?

When you use the "Tell me about" option on Laura, she gives the same answer for "Nightkin" and "Supermutant". Go figure :?

Would the Nightkin have better agility/perception, etc. or would they just have better Weapon/doctor/Science etc stats? Assuming they would indeed be special SM's.

I would think that since Laura probably isn't the most widely traveled individual "Nightkin" and "Super Mutant" would be the same to here since -- IIRC -- all of the SMs at the Cathedral were Nightkin.

While the Nightkin's superiority could simply be a result of game balance/logic (you're tougher when you get there, ergo you need tougher opponents) it does seem that they are the elite/hard core troopers of the Unity. One thing I would point out is their equipment. Nightkin are equipped w/Stealthboys whereas "lesser" Super Mutants are not.

And they had that black armour[?] on, threfore they had a higher armour class.

I'm assuming the nightkin were the first batch of mutants, therefore more trained and deserved armour and stealthboys, also the master mabye trusted them more.

And were the nightkins called that because they went out at night (Kin of the night?), and couldn't be seen therefore better at patrolling and stuff?

Why does lou have the tubes and pipes in his back btw? And weren't there some kind of telekinetic mutants somewhere...or did I read something wrong?

Their armor looks like a black leather armor. The 'nightkin' title might have come of their black clothing and/or them wearing Stealthboys, IIRC they also had a darker skin(?) making them different from regular SM's. This is probably the case, because they have different stats than regular Super Mutants.

Wow, I can't remember any of this stuff. I don't give much attention to detail, but that lack of notice is disturbing. And I don't have the patience to replay the game to that point. I kept a save position from the Base. Where there any Nightkin there?

Not that I can remember. I dont' have a saved game any later than the Hub right now since I lost my two from the Base in my recent meltdown. IIRC the only place that Nightkin were encountered was the Cathedral, though.

(The question now is, "How do I simulate a StealthBoy in FoT?" ;) )

I have some other saves also, but not anywhere close to the Cathedral. Problem is, the games crashes in random times when I use them(possibly because I hex edited the game in most of those to get a perfect character) and that's the reason I can't play. If I can find a stable one I might send it to you.

(Also, couldn't u simulate a StealthBoy by giving the player additional sneak capability?)

Don't worry about it. I'm going through the game setting up saves at the beginning of various locations simply in case I decide to do a replica map of any of them. (Necropolis has real FoT possibilities... :twisted: ...although one would have to take some "liberties" filling in some areas.) Thanks for the offer, though. :)

The Nightkin look as they do because they are using Stealth Boys, an item which cloaks the wearer (Although personally using the item on ones character it seems to have no use other than turning them transparent looking like the nightkin.) If you kill them they have stealth boys, and they look like your character does if it uses a stealth boy, proof of how this is so. I believe they are called nightkin to leave some mystique about their presence, and make the religion seem more mystical. They wear the stealth boys to sneak around the cathedral without attracting attention as a bulky mutant I believe......So they are just normal mutants with stealth boys, no special armor I believe. By the way, where does one find a "Master Nightkin"? Another question dealing with them....you can ask them to speak with the man in charge twice, then they say "Go upstairs, others of my kind shall judge you." The ones upstairs just say the same things though. "Leave me, or die." Just another stupid unfinished glitch in Fallout. There are at least 250 of those in the games, things that lead you nowhere, they really should have spent more time....still it is a most wonderful game, even with the careless flaws. If anyone knows about being judged by them please say.

Actually, would the regular, dumb-witted SM be able to operate a StealthBoy, and also understand the need that they should keep themselves hidden and also be able to handle whatever humans strayed from the main room in the cathedral and met them(speak with them, not just kill them like normal SM would probably do in lack of more sophisticated ways).
I believe they are elite SM, those who were less radiated and came out better.
In the Masters/Greys disc you can read that he was obviously dissapointed with the average intelligence of the mutants and saught to breed other, intelligent ones such as he.

A thing i've always wondered is, how could Richard Grey mutate the way he did?
He grew tentacles, and was able to absorb both other mutations and even electrical equipment into him. And then ending up like a huge blob cyborg.
How can this be?
Looking at the next smartest mutant, Lou, who just looks like any other SM and doesn't have any outgrowing tentacles or other strangeness, why did the Grey mutate the way he did?
I realize mutations must of course be random, but no other mutant in the game becomes like the Master, even the ones not subjected to radiation prior to being dipped..
