Sex in the game (NOT for young eyes)
Sex in the game (NOT for young eyes)
Does anybody else think they overdid the sex angle in FO2? I think that explains why New Reno is the best shelled out city, with the most quests, but the themes are morally reprehensible, ESPECIALLY if you play a female character.
Example - It looks like Slim Picket, the guy from trapper town rapes your female character if you express a keen interest in getting the key off of him (you have no real "no" option).
Example - You can pimp your wife.
Example - If female you can get pregnant by T Ray.
Example - Francis the mutant, another rapist character.
Example - The nerdy, drooling Myron, the total twat who makes your life miserable if your character is female (at least until you remove his brain in the Sierra Army Depot to power the brain bot).
Example - You can have sex with the woman whose husband was arrested in exchange for releasing him.
The above are all extremely wrong things. There are many more, but i will just use up valuable space ranting and you all probably know some of the rest.
Don't you all agree that if they had but spent the same amount of effort on the actual game rather than on some very morally dubious issues that the game overall would have been a lot better. They may have even finished all those places that sound so cool in the design document.
Rant over.

The original Fallout had minimal sex in the game, at least compared to Fallout 2. So it isn't a 'must-have' aspect in the fallout games. The possibility of getting laid is OK, but in Fallout 2 you could shag in almost every town and for some reason, Fallout 2 designers thought sex and drugs made New Reno a kick-ass town. Ironically, it was quite the opposite. So I don't give a radrat's ass of how Fallout 3 handles adult themes and swearing, as long as it doesn't hurt the overall gameplay.

Hey, at least he takes his time (something like 4 hours) rather than the 16 minutes it takes to cross the street and get it one w/Joey and get your clothes back on... (I had a character that hosed him down w/a SMG for that...)Jimbo san wrote:Example - It looks like Slim Picket, the guy from trapper town rapes your female character if you express a keen interest in getting the key off of him (you have no real "no" option).
I was not aware of this. How does it affect gameplay? Does it simply state something in the end credits?Jimbo san wrote:Example - If female you can get pregnant by T Ray.
Francis will..."violate"...your character regardless of sex. What I didn't like was that it was a gratuitous reference to Pulp Fiction.Jimbo san wrote:Example - Francis the mutant, another rapist character.
I find him more amusing when my character is female. It's when I'm playing a male character that he's annoying, IMHO.Jimbo san wrote:Example - The nerdy, drooling Myron, the total twat who makes your life miserable if your character is female (at least until you remove his brain in the Sierra Army Depot to power the brain bot).
I wasn't aware of this one, either. (Maybe it has something to do w/your Rep. as to whether or not you get the option?)Jimbo san wrote:Example - You can have sex with the woman whose husband was arrested in exchange for releasing him.
I will agree that too much time was spent on meaningless sex. It was pretty damned juvenile, actually. While some of the situations did add to the atmosphere -- for instance being an attractive female who could use her body to get ahead, for instance w/Metzger -- there were too many other instances that made large parts of the game seem like they were designed by a horny 13 year old.
Something that would have improved those aspects of the game would have been adding consequences for the player. You like to fuck whores? Not a problem! However, there is a chance that you will contract a nasty case of Drippy Dick/Wasteland Clap. A female character should have been able to become pregnant from unprotected sex (or perhaps even allow a chance for those Jimmy Hats to fail, although that goes for both sexes).

1- No, it doesn't really affect gameplay, as it only happens after you complete the game. Turns out one of the condoms he used had a hole in it...OTB wrote:I was not aware of this. 2-I think you need a negative karma to get it on with the unfortunate woman.
3- Good point. Perhaps Myron was involved in development?

That's crap. I never had trouble getting out of the conversation in fact it wasn't that obvious to get to that point in the first place, even with 10cha...Jimbo san wrote:Example - It looks like Slim Picket, the guy from trapper town rapes your female character if you express a keen interest in getting the key off of him (you have no real "no" option).
Total crap. Can't do that, and I did him until he exploded (now THAT is stupid)Example - If female you can get pregnant by T Ray.
Well you always have the option NOT to arm wrestle him...Example - Francis the mutant, another rapist character.
I don't actually. I think part of what makes fallout is giving you the option of being amoral. I have to say that I found some things stupid, like the porn studio and how T-Ray acts, not to mention Myron...Don't you all agree that if they had but spent the same amount of effort on the actual game rather than on some very morally dubious issues that the game overall would have been a lot better. I think in a wastelandish world chances are that sex would be a very viable form of bartering, wether or not it's morally acceptable. In fact it is presently so I don't see why it wouldn't be when "needs" are greater...
Now that's a good general moves as it's better, but being digusted by the sex in it seems rather too purist for my taste - and that from someone who was virgin until 21 when I met my wife...*Throws away copy of FO2 in disgust and starts to play FO instead*

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. As far as FO goes, i've always preferred it to FO2. What i was trying (unsuccessfully it would seem) to put across is that the programmers seem to have wasted their time on what i see as rather sad minor diversions from the main quest. I have no real problem with sex in games, I am no prude. I think they got it just right in the original, with just a few instances, but in the sequel they went waaaaay overboard. The reason i have stopped playing FO2 is simply because it smacks of cash-initis. They rushed it to make the deadline and it feels unfinished.

I think that one of the things that the original got right regarding sex is that there was an instance were being a "goody-two-shoes" would get you laid, while in another you had to be a villain/"bad boy". The former is Sinthia, and the other is Keri, in Junktown and The Hub respectively.Jimbo san wrote:I have no real problem with sex in games, I am no prude. What FO lacked was opportunities for women to exploit men's needs, which FO2 had, but which were implemented on a very uneven basis.
I checked through the game's endings again just to be sure, and there's nothing in FO2 about a female character getting pregnant, BTW. Were you going on rumor, perhaps?

Sex is pretty boring in Fo2, and Fo1. I don't care if it's in there, or not.
What I did like was the ability to exploit through sex, which was implemented pretty shallowly in Fo2. Personally, I'd much rather they tryed to make it so characters who use deplomacy to be able to get through the game without having to directly square off against Horrigan at the end.

There's only 1 single isntance where there's sex in FO1 and it's not that obvious to reach...
I don't think they went overboard with sex personnally.
Yes I do agree they went overboard with plenty of other stuff though, but it's not "specifically sex" which deprived Fallout 2 from it's quality.
I mean your post was about sex getting overboard, and there are two occasions which they did (T-Ray exploding, Myron) but the rest was pretty legitimate.

No, Red, there's two instances. There's the option to have sex w/Sinthia after having saved her from the hostage-taker. There's also the option to proposition Keri in The Hub. She works for the Crimson Caravan, but will only agree if you have negative Karma, because she wants to find out if you're as tough as they say (or words to that effect).Red wrote:There's only 1 single isntance where there's sex in FO1 and it's not that obvious to reach...

I mentioned the porn studio previously though admitably not in the last post. As for New Reno, I have to admit there's way too many compared to normal people but you have to think of New Reno as a much bigger town and that's more or less New Reno's red-light. I mean why bother making a "city" area when there's nothing interesting hapenning in there anyway?

Has anyone ever noticed that no one complains that an aspect of the same issue applies to The Hub? Take a look at how many Hub cops are standing around versus the number of citizens and you'll see what I mean.Red wrote:...[Y]ou have to think of New Reno as a much bigger town and that's more or less New Reno's red-light. I will say that the concept of abstraction applies to both of them -- just like Red mentioned about New Reno -- however, in The Hub's defense -- one can say that all of those cops standing around have a game effect: you start trouble and they will come to kick your teeth down your throat...or at least die trying.

Personally, i'd love to walk around in the ruins of a former city, exploring the demolished buildings, searching through old rusty lockers and worn crates, grubbing around in piles of junk and corpses half-buried in rubble, conversing with people who pointlessly make out their puny existence, suffering with hunger and disease, crammed into one of the few buildings still standing.
Not neccesarily riddled with bars, casinos, easter eggs, quests, whores and stores.

Then again, The Hub is the base of caravan trading in the wasteland, with people constantly rolling in and out of town. I figure they'd need a well-sized police force to strike quickly and keep the order.Take a look at how many Hub cops are standing around versus the number of citizens and you'll see what I mean.
That and I think it's partly a game balance issue. The police in the game don't react intelligently, so they're given numbers to compensate. Assuming you don't rob them blind, each of the guards has plenty of stimpacks and ammo, which further corroborates my theory. Whores, however, can not be attributed to game balance.

NPCs seem to always take drugs (Jet if they happen to have them - and excepting your own NPCs, depending on the drug level you set them). So I usually steal all drugs they have in ptheir possessions, including stimpacks, since I think I'll make much better use of them .
That brings up an interesting idea... what if one was to take Jet and plant it on Big Jesus and then go in fight mode... Would he take it? (Same applies to Westin for that matter).

The police in Hub was in order, after all, it was the trade capital. Also, the police in NCR was logical to me, but them standing in every corner wearing their silly uniforms bothered me a bit. But whores/pimps/drug dealers in New Reno was over-done. You had more whores than 'customers' walking around, and most of the potential customers were casino-cattle anyway. Also, there was the Cat's Paw. I doubt any of the junkies living in New Reno could afford those prices. The lack of 'normal' people seemed weird to me, as everybody was an oddity or had serious problems.
