Maximum Number of Entities?

Post by Jimmyjay86 »

I just had a flash of inspiration and wondered if there would be any slow down effect from having a hundred or so npc's battling each other on the screen at once. I'm talking about mass mayhem or max-violence! Has anybody tried something like that?

Hrmm. Well on Endocores "What is honour amongst thugs" Hm. I think thats one.... with the mountain complex with an armory in the middle. Well he had alot of PA armored BOS running into it battling the complex guards.... It slowed performance abit down. But I think a large scale battle would work if not over-done to much. Actually im planning one myself for a map.

Apparently, JJ86, you haven't played Rebellion3 :P

Three words: Hordes of Deathclaws.

Yer talking about CTB, right?

Obviously, there would be a slowdown if the game has to keep track of who shoots what at who, not to mention the game has to draw all that stuff.

Yeah, I did a test last night with about 50 dogs versus 50 ghouls. The dogs won many, many slow minutes later. It looks funky because they line up and when they shift it is in one big glob. And something really massive would be too slow and make your movements hard to control.

Well 100 Entieties at once is a really very big battle.... not much surprise that it slows down most machines.

I'm assuming you're planning an invasion scenario or something then. Why not break it in multiple next to each other maps? Like there is a northern front, a middlewestern one etc?

Nah, wouldn't have the impact of being in the midst of an immense sea of fighting armies. I wanted two armies duking it out wuth hammers and knives and have you in the middle helping out with pistols. But the mass combat of that situation is system-taxing and not very interesting.

O.k. Plan B then: how about script the way that when enemies from a group get killed you bring more in the battlefield from the undergroung you had them until then? You could have your enemies consist of 3 displayed on map groups and say 3ple that much hidden. I don't think you'd need too many triggers for it.

I've scrapped the idea and am going with something else I wanted to do where you will help to defend a new Brotherhood base against tribal invaders. Each wave will have attackers with different sets of agendas to make it interesting. It will have multiple waves of invaders and I may make a version for MP coop.

Here is a conceptual plan:

Assault On Rib Mountain

The expansion of the brotherhood into new areas was not without conflict. An old military production facility had been located on Rib Mountain. It had been abandoned for over 130 years although a tribe of Apaches lived on the outskirts of the area. The brotherhood moved in and immediately began to rehab the facility into its former glory. Negotiations between the tribe were almost nonexistant because of the language barrier. But the brotherhood ignored the protests of the tribal elders about it being their sacred land. The Apaches became resentful and angry as the brotherhood technicians and soldiers made the area their home and there were a few flare-ups of violence between the groups. Your squads were to provide security as the base prepared to finish the reconstruction. Mere days were left until external force barriers were to be finally powered.

Doesn't sound bad. I don't know about the Apache's part. How many are alive today? I thought there are some 5000 Indians left in a land somewhere and the rest are mixed with other races. The general idea gives a notion of pioneers era and the conflicts between them and Indians, which is a fresh idea and I like fresh ideas.

That does sound good, JJ86, although I'm concerned now that people will think that I ripped you off for a couple of my misisons. (I have a chapter in my campaign that was inspired by Zulu/the Battle of Rorke's Drift.)

I'm not sure exactly how many Apaches are alive today, but there are lots of "Indian" reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. I like the idea that these peoples escaped the destruction that the White Man brought on himself.

The only suggestion that I have is that you might not want to call them "Apaches", JJ86. Rather, have them either use a corrupted version of the name, some name the "Indians" use for themselves -- which, oddly enough, always seem to x-late as "human being" -- or a long-dead tribal coalition/confederation that has essentially been reborn in the wake of The Bomb. Spanish is also an option since there were lots of tribes -- including some branches of the Apaches -- that spoke it.

It definitely sounds like a good, sound concept, though!

In Wisconsin alone there are at least five different tribes - Ho-Chunk, Potawatomi, Menomonie, Ojibwa, and Oneida. I would guess that there are at least 1 million although there may be some mixed-race. Maybe I'll go with a created tribe name.

Well, if you think of it, there are only a handfull of possible things one can do in the American continent, so i wouldn't be very surprised for many modders to have similiar(not a mispelled word) ideas. I think i have some that are somewhat close to that. The interpretations will vary probably and that is enough.
