What? We're on air? S**T! :: hides the smut rag ::

Erm, hi. I am, as you may be aware, DJ Slamák of Vault of the Future, a Fallout site. Since DAC's resident shiv-wielding gangsta, pogo dancer and hydrogen bomb, Killzig, has granted me rights to p1mp myself on DAC's frontpage (which is undoubtedly a transitory state), I hereby present to you Vault of the Future's interview with Timothy Cain, one of the Fallout big-wigs (perhaps the biggest of them all).

Here's a teaser:

DJS: An idea for a Fallout 3 theme song:

TC: How about an opera? There are some powerful and very sad pieces out there, like the aria from "La Wally". I think an appropriate opening movie with such a theme could be very strong.
And another one:

DJS: Why was the Troika Fat Cam abolished?

TC: We got too ugly and the camera broke. :) Seriously, we moved to new offices, and we don't have a net drop in the weed.
We also discussed Brian Fargo, icons, walking doors, and advertising. Oh, yeah, and Fallout. Read the whole Tim Cain in his own write over yonder!

Also, note that there's a new Real Story comic.

There, p1mpage done. That is all. :: gets shanked in the liver by Kreegle ::

[Killzig says] You can say shit here Slamak. In fact, you can say pretty much anything. Even stupid-fucking-bloodycuntish-stankass-cocknball-shit like "Muhammad is a terrorist."

An interview with Tim Cain? Wow, that's something.

An interesting read, too. Good work, Slamak!

I thought this quote was interesting:

Of course, whether or not it's practical is another issue.

Congrats, DJS. The interview is very interesting, so thanks for sharing it with us.

Bad move: don't ask developers to give opinion on the work of the people they know and/or closely work(ed) with. You may be putting them in a difficult position between respecting each other's work and giving you their honest, if brutal, opinion.

That was an interesting interview, DJS. I thought you chose some good questions. Tim Cain seems like a nice guy, doesn't he?

I have a follow-up question for people who know about all this stuff. Where does GURPS fit in? Tim mentioned he worked hard to get the GURPS license. Is SPECIAL derived from it?

Sure does. So does Chris Taylor (see earlier updates). Chris Avellone seems to suffer from some sort of inferiority complex (he declined the interview offer saying he's not important enough).

Good guess. Yep, SPECIAL was derived from GURPS after some legal complications.

I agree. That's why I pointed out (off-screen :)) that if he's hesitant to answer any questions, "No Comment" is always an option. I just couldn't help it. (I was particularly worried about the IPLY stuff, 'cause he seemed pretty pissed in the last interview. :))

Wahey! An interesting interview, thanks DJS.
No Tim Cain interview is complete without the 'Tim wearing a paperbag hat' pic, good thing you remembered that.

That made me very happy. :)

IIRC, GURPS license was tossed when Steve Jackson didn't like the gore and tried to pressure the developers.

Classic RPGs? Like, AD&D with hairy orcs and half-naked elven chicks?

GJ, DJS! That was indeed a good read. :)

Here's a radical concept: a fantasy RPG w/half-naked orcs and hairy elven chicks!

Do you think it would sell?

Well, there are some people with wierd tastes out there. And remember, Interplay did manage to sell us half-naked giant mutants.
