I would take the cat to the vet, and not just for the fur and flees. If I were you, I'd have the cat examined, it could be ill and no one knows it yet. It might be a good idea to also take the cat to a groomer afterwords.

Heh..
So... How much blood have you lost to this theoretical cat?
Really, take it to the vet... $10 is a bargain for that kind of hassle.

If the cat is sick, then finish it so it doesn't need to suffer anymore. Live practical, that's how I've always done.
I had this cat and it was hit by a car... All nails shattered in pieces, it didn't move any other part of it's body than the tail and it's eyes were "forced" shut. Lots of blood over the fur.
We thought, my father and I, that if it wouldn't start moving until tomorrow... We'll end it's days. It was the best way.
Then - tomorrow it was bouncing up and down in the room! Hooray!

Hmmm, you are approaching the eloquence level of the Gimp Mask, Fallout Junkie. Pyro: how about an answer, the question has obviously generated some small amount of interest. God forbid it require another thread to answer. Super-H must know!
