Whatever, its fiction anyway. It's a blend of the 50ties with future technology, this will inevitably conjure load of bullshit, but hey what else could you expect of a game?

Until recently, all Russian avionics was based on vacuum tube technology....when that North Korean pilot flew his Mig (which was considered Soviet state of the art at the time) to Japan and defected, the US defence experts laughed their arses off when they took the plane apart and found vacuum tubes in the avionics/weapon systems. They soon stopped laughing when someone pointed out that this plane would survive exposure to an EMP that would knock out all US and NATO aircraft systems....

Hi tech is not always the best way to go....read about all the problems the Allies had with their equipment in the Gulf War if you don't believe me!

Aside from the shitness of the whole no cars in the level bit, i liked the way the cars worked in FOT as opposed to FO2, i mean if i came across a group of aliens in the wasteland i wouldnt drive right up to then, and get out of the car right in the middle of em all.

Well, Viktor hit the nail on the head, but to that I'd like to add that my position is gleaned from what I've read in the FoB and on the BIS boards.

Why do you think that everything looks so clunky (i.e. "'50s-ish") in the FO universe? (Minus the equipment in FoT, but that was largely due to poor cooperation between IP and MF.)

My 2 caps' worth:

I like the idea of a choice of several vehicles. Brahmin carts, motorcycles, cars, jeeps, trucks, powered exo-walkers, all-terrain spiderbots, etc. would offer your choice of compromises between energy efficiency, cargo, passengers, speed, and cost(if purchased and not found/quested for).
I'm not insane, I'm just misunderstood. Unless I misunderstood the meaning of "insane".

I would prefer simple transportation like FO2 and I want to explore the areas myself. Come to thing of it, cars aren't essential at all. I would like to see something like a new animal for transportation and cargo. Don't know what that could be though.

EMP can wipe out a vacuum tube, but not nearly as easy as it can wipe out a transistor. Then again, if you were that close to the blast to burn out a vacuum tube, there's most likely other problems with that electric system than burned out vacuum tubes. ;)

Also, there's another huge problem with vac tubes. They burn out with use. Try finding a steady source of vac tubes when they're no longer being made. Big problem there.

The thought that the Great War takes place in 2077, so there must be more cars, is erroneous. Even in the 1950s, most people didn't see the need for everyone in the family having a car. Considering not a lot has changed in Fallout's 2077 since our 1950s, you can't simply assume that it would be different in that respect from the 1950s. After all, we're talking simpler times persisting over a century.

You also can't assume the population growth in America followed our trend either. Even if it did up to our time, more industrialization usually leads to less children being born per family. In agricultural societies, kids are free labor. In industrial societies, kids are addition mouths to feed.

Also, consider that the places where there are the most cars are also the best places to drop nuclear bombs. Most of those cars would have been wiped out in the blasts simply because they're urban areas.

As to Munky's idea of shielded vehicles, that's what the gasoline cars were all about. Check the intro to Fallout.

However, the largest problem with cars is time. Fallout 2 was 160 or so years after the Great War, when cars stopped being produced for obvious reasons. Sit a car for a month and try and start it.

Well, as St_P said, cars would first of all be much rarer. Also, most of them still run on Gasoline, meaning they need oil. Remember why the war started? That's right! Over the last oil-field! That's where the encleve lived. Now there's absolutely no more oil and they've just started with micro-fusion... This also means that most of the micro-fusion cars belonged to either the military or the rich. The military was destroyed, there goes most of the cars. The rich work in the cities, park there, cities=major targets=bye-bye cars! Now we're down to almost no runnavble cars at all. Add to that around 240 years (seeing as FO3 will probably be around 80 years after FO2) and you have hardly anny runable vehicles. I mean, put your car outside for a year and see what the elemnts do to it for crying out loud!

Somebody makes anew one you say? And where'd they get the knowledge and necessary tools to make the small pieces of electronics needed not to mention getting/making vacuum tubes??? And how're they supposed to make so large sheets of metal?

It all goes on and on and on... You'll eventually arrive at the conclusion that Brahmin-carts are the most advanced piece of transportation you'll find in the wastelands this time...

I'm sure I've seen this discussed elsewhere, but what about the Enclave's vertibirds from FO2???

- What tech are they based on?? Vacuum tubes or some Fallout universe development??

- What fuel do the use?? Oil based powering some sorth of gas turbine as per our modern helicopters or some fusion based powerplant??

- What are the chances of finding a working vertibird in Fallout 3's time period?? If stored in a vacuum sealed hanger, there's a chance one might still work after 80 years, but would the fuel still be useable???

- More importanly, flying a rotary wing aircraft (unless it's heavily computer controlled like our modern 'fly by wire' aircraft) takes many months training even for intelligent, educated personnel. The idea of some 'brahmin tagging tribal' just finding a vertibird and flying off into the sunset is complete bollocks.... Unless the PC or one of the NPC is already a trained pilot, picking a 'flyboy' tag skill or reading a stack of flight manuals should NOT allow your tribal/vault dweller character to use aircraft as anything but a passenger.

I think the vertiberd argument comes down these two points:
1) It’s very unlikely that there are any left.
2) Even if you did fined a working vertibird you wouldn't be able to use it without specialist training.

Ok what about my personal favourite, Exo-Walkers! There much more likely to exist or be used since its basically its a really a advanced version of power armour.

Matt brings up that the Enclave didn't scare the BOS much until they developed Vertibirds when you talk to him about the plan quest, so they were developed after the Great War.

Now depending on what the designers of FO2 were thinking at the time they added this, assuming there was any thought to it at all, you could say it was either more advanced or less advanced than the pre-Great War flyers.

After all, the Enclave most likely had all the research and engineering data archived at their base, the oil rig. However, getting parts to build these things wouldn't be easy. They're out at sea with only one tanker, and the world is in ruins on the shore. You can't just mail order those parts. You have to machine them yourself.

Probably oil, since Navarro is a refueling base and the Enclave's base was the a rig sitting on the last source of oil on the planet. They did use that tanker for a while, so they could have hauled oil in it for a while.

If they were fusion powered, like the highwayman, they really wouldn't need a refueling base. Fusion cells are fairly easy to come by, especially when you've got legions of Adv PA troops to take them from people.

Probably not. Gasoline breaks down after a few months of sitting around.

Yeah, the training thing would be a problem. Most likely, learning to fly a vertibird, or any flying craft, with no prior knowledge would result in the destruction of the craft, the death of anyone in that craft, or both.
