Mass market only works if you set the trends, not follow them.
Damn straight. I find it strange that sheep are universally known as fucking stupid animals, and yet we as humans seem determined to imitate them.

By the time something is a trend it's too late to follow it. The kind of logic that goes behind reasoning like "Verant make millions from Everquest, therefore if we make a MMOG we'll also make millions" is faulty, pure and simple. They made millions because they were right there at the start of popular MMOGing along with Origin. They pitched a mass-market idea to a largely untapped market and it worked. Everyone since has achieved considerably less success, in most cases, the result has been total failure. Why? Because the so called "trend" being set is completely misinterpreted. MMOGs aren't the next big thing, EQ2 is.

You can't expect to give the market something they've already got and hope to succeed, because you'll wind up on the pages of that thick-ass tome "Failed Enterprises of the Age of Communication." The real trick is giving the people something they don't have. Even better if they actually want it, but it's just as good convincing them that they want it, although that incurs a larger cost. It's a simple matter of supply and demand, with the added bonus that with effective marketing you can dictate the demand.

"You want/need this. You don't have it. We can give it to you."

Pretty stirring, huh? Much more profound than.

"Forget that. Have this. It's like what you've got, but better."

No thanks, o mighty shepherd, I'm already happy with these emerald green pastures, and the rumour going around the herd is that the farmer who gave us this is going to give us a bigger greener pasture in 6 months time.

Sure, the grass may be greener on the other side, and there's bound to be a small portion who buy into that, but imagine how many more bought into nice green grass when all they had was bare topsoil.

You know, that might even be simple enough for a marketing exec to understand, although they'd probably have to get somebody to read it for them. Maybe if I presented it with colorful learning aids and a couple of pie charts it might even get through to the pathetic little fucks.

Heh, clone making is like an attempt to make money out of nothing, when developers don't want to take risks (read: really pay attention to) with gameplay and focus on more "tangible" things like graphics, story, art.

But I guess you get exactly what you put in, so no wonderous money-making machines for you, no sir!

GIMP is indeed a very interesting program for those that don`t have the cash for Photoshop, i have it, it`s a good idea to promote it like you do. Great idea, keep up the good work.

As for the Fallout "community", there's a difference between Angry and mewling, pathetic, crackpot morons who'd willing sacrifice their babies to get another cheap crack at the Black isle devs. You're in the second catagory, kids.
Actually I have no beef with the people at Black Isle. I think they do very good work and I know people here don't like that idea. I actually would like to get a job there as a programmer. Hate Interplay though. Mostly hate them for making FOT. I will hate that game till I die.

I have a feeling you'd fit right in, given that you're often resembling something related in numerous ways to BrainPuuk.

I don't know if that was a complment or a insult. Considering the majority of your posts towards me I'm guessing it was an insult.

I'm guessing that that would be a good guess.

I guess that if we let the monkeys at interplay make the game and blackisle publish it it would be like fo:t with the story-telling elements of ps:t (IT IS HUGE HIT! THE PLAYERS WOULD LOVE READING A BOOK THEN PRESSING Continue... AND READING ANOTHER BOOK! THIS IS GOOD IDEA YES?)

EDIT:FIXED FOR MAJOR UNIVERSAL LIES

Since when does Interplay make games? They aren't a developer.

Incorrect. They used to be both developer AND publisher. Now they're just developers and Vivendi publishes their games.

Interplay is one of the oldest development houses still standing in the industry. Their crown jewel, Black Isle, is a part of Interplay and has been making RPGs for almost 5 years now. Quite successful ones too. People seem forgetting that BIS is not a separate studio making games for Interplay to publish. After IPLY somehow fucked things up with BioWare, I'm not surprised they decided to leave publishing stuff to Vivendi.
