A new post-apoc movie to sink your teeth into?
A new post-apoc movie to sink your teeth into?
<strong>[ -> N/A]</strong>
Joshua sent along a note about a new film named "Equlibrium", which he says is a "great flick based in a dystopian/post-apocalyptic future." I couldn't find out much about it, as it apparently doesn't have an official website, but <a href="http://movieweb.com/movie/equilibrium/" target="_blank">MovieWeb</a> have a description of it:<blockquote><em>In the nation of Libria, there is always peace among men. The rules of the Librian system are simple. If you are happy, you will be arrested. If you cry, the law will hunt you down. If you read a contraband book or so much as look at a smuggled painting, you've committed a criminal sin. And skip your medicine and your life will be over.
This is the shocking futuristic world of EQUILIBRIUM, a razor-sharp action-thriller set in a future where emotion has been banned as the very root of crime and war. To keep the peace, citizens must take their daily dose of Prozium, a powerful designer drug that stops feelings dead and keeps everyone on an even keel. Refuse to take the drug, and special police, trained like Samurai in unique forms of deadly combat, go on the hunt. </em></blockquote>Hmm, sounds interesting enough. Spazmo, a lovely chap from our forums, found <a href="http://www.duckandcover.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3603" target="_blank">this link</a> - which is the trailer for the film. No, it's not the Matrix!
And finally, the sad conclusion - <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Equilibrium-1118792/" target="_blank">Rotten Tomatoes</a> gives it a very ugly average review score of 19%. Uh-oh. And the "Cream of the Crop" score (reviews from respected newspapers) is even <b>lower</b>... 15% only!<blockquote><em>"Equilibrium the movie, as opposed to the manifesto, is really, really stupid."
-- <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/mov ... rid=819888" target="_blank">Stephen Hunter, WASHINGTON POST</a>
"It's super- violent, super-serious and super-stupid."
-- <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... quilibrium" target="_blank">Mick LaSalle, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE</a>
"A movie that could be stupider only if it were longer."
-- <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/06/movies/06EQUI.html" target="_blank">Elvis Mitchell, NEW YORK TIMES</a></em></blockquote>Oh. I guess that's that, then. Thanks for the heads-up anyway Joshua - looks like a DVD rental.

I've been reading the reviews on IMDB for this yesterday.
Most of the reviewing public gave it 7.8/10!!!
Also the people who've seen it say it's quite good, and though low budget they enjoyed it equally to the Matrix.
Some said about Brazil and stuff(like people who've seen this will not like it and it just so happens that I did see Brazil), but I got the impression they relied on critics opinion and didn't actually see it also. Would be nice if someone who actually saw it told us about it...

Equilibrium
Howdy, I'm Joshua, the bloke who recommended/warned you about the movie Equilibrium. I've seen it, and it's fantastic. Here's my review that I've posted on a different forum. I'd post a new one here, but I don't like you people and this place smells.
This movie was amazing! I love futuristic/utopian/post-apocalyptic movies, so I was instantly interested when I heard of this film. I just got back from the Regal on Delaware Ave. and man was it worth the walk in the cold! (for those of you who don't know Philly, Delaware Ave. is on the opposite side of the city from Temple Univ. and the subway system goes to about 3 places) Instead of shying away from the trappings and cliches of 1984/Brave New World/Fahrenheit 451, it embraces them as a subgenre. It accepts this early in the film, so that the rest of the picture you can watch the action take place in that world, rather than try and create a world "strikingly similar but totally different." So don't sit there through the entire movie saying "Christ, all they need is Big Brother," like every film critic in the nation. This film was superbly shot, acted, choreographed and imagined. I couldn't have asked for more from this film. Christian Bale is about 100 times cooler than Neo, whom he will be quite frequently compared to, I'm sure.
As you can see by this review, I'd never have a future as a movie critic. You can also see the quantaties of ass that was kicked by this movie. Go see it.

I love this forum! I especially love the people it attracts.Ungod wrote:Howdy, I'm Joshua, the bloke who recommended/warned you about the movie Equilibrium. I've seen it, and it's fantastic. EDIT: Bugger, seems I need to fix an avatar. freeyellow have changed my web-site address once again.
Age
20, not that it matters. Weiners come in all ages.
Equilibrium is awesome. I'm buying the DVD as soon as it comes out. Fight scenes are really unique. And fast... and awesome... and good. I suggest you get to see this in the theater 'cause I'm doubting it'll be there very long. There were about 10 other people in there with me and my friend and it was opening night.
Yeah the first 4 songs on Wither are amazing. But Weight of the World, Falls Apart, and Inside You drag the album down a little. All of their albums are amazing though. My 5 fav songs are Shame, Why, Waking Up Beside You, Save Yourself, and Dawn. I was devastated when they broke up earlier this year in February. I'm hoping they get back together, but I'm interested in what Chris' project The Dreaming will sound like.
Yeah, I was sorry too when I heard they split. All their albums are great, but I think the last one's not even half as good as any of their other 3.
According to a press release, The Dreaming will be something more akin to the Ungod era of SW, something which in my book is good!
P.S.: I found the Equilibrium poster similar to Deus Ex's cover. Daaaaamn...it's not slated for release over here yet.

Pastorius, are we long lost brothers or something? I love Deus Ex as well. You're right though, the Equilibrium poster does look like the Deus Ex cover. Shiny as well. I have it ordered and I can't wait to hang it in my dorm room next to my Strange Days poster. Stabbing's 4th album was a huge departure, but I don't think it's any worse than any of their other albums. There are still plenty of great tracks: So Far Away, Wasted, High, Breathe You In. I wonder if an Ungod-era sound means that it's going to be dark and gritty industrial, or just super-nihilistic like Ungod was.
Hopefully both! 8)Ungod wrote:I wonder if an Ungod-era sound means that it's going to be dark and gritty industrial, or just super-nihilistic like Ungod was.
I've to admit I haven't played much Deus Ex (a li'l bit at a friend's place) and wasn't too impressed by it ("System Shock cash-in" came to my mind instantly, but it might have been a rushed judgement). Although I've been promising myself for a while now to give it a try, if only to see what all the fuss is all about.
System Shock always brought Half-Life rip off to mind. But Deus Ex is great because, like Fallout, it's set in a gritty, futuristic world with bums and junkies crowding the streets and technology at you disposal. Some of the shootouts get downright hair-raising. I'd always come out with sweaty palms. There's always multiple ways to accomplish each task and the end gives you the decision of how the world will be run in the future. Plus, the pc JC Denton is one bad mother. You can pick it up for $15 at Best Buy. Give it another try.
