If you sleep or do other things that take time, youre character can get radiated anywhere (the background radiation). Reading books should always be followed by a pack of RAD-away.

Mutated fruit or the Golden Gecko bites (not slashes) will radiate you in Klamath. The caves just do damage, you can take a friggin' TON of damage in them and not be radiated.
On a sidenote, Gecko radiation is about 1 point worth, so be sure to wait until you've done every quest involving golden geckos before you take Radaway.
And as for the 'background radiation everywhere' thing...really..really no...the only place that did that in any fallout game was the glow in the original, and only about 37 people told you that beforehand. Gecko was maybe supposed to, but it doesn't.

I'm not evil, I just like making things explode

But it's an evil place. You have to walk through a large map with puddles og goo and tons of radiation not to mention all the fire-geckos looming around.

Tank is right, it is an evil place, for evil people. I had high luck, major negative karma, and there I was. I guess thats why when you enter the area it says something like "you must have really pissed off some one to end up here", or something to that effect.Tank wrote:But it's an evil place. I think LOW luck or BAD karma will get you this encounter, or perhaps there is a trigger event somewhere else that we don't know about.

I've never been radiated by sleeping. NEVER. There is no event that triggers it.
Every single time I though radiation had "affected me" it ended up being a radiated art who hit me, or I ate an irradiated fruit.
There might be the exception of you not finding a proper source of water in the wild but you actually stop and notice this right away (if it even does radiation damage...)
That's an interesting take on the random encounters, all I remember about me finding it was that it was early on in the game (so low Karma) and I've never managed to get it with high karma (regardless of luck level).
There is no specific trigger for this event, as it's real easy to see those in the game looking (i think) at worldmap.txt.
