So does the wire in the puzzle room of the Enclave actually serve a useful purpose?

Yes, that's what the only traditional rpg puzzle in FO2 is called: The Puzzle Room ;-)

The wire is in room 9 next to the computer.

Have you tried using the tool on it to see if you can cut it, maybe? It might shut off the electricity.

Doyle is correct. You have to have a certain amount of repair skill (and maybe science skill as well, I forget) and it will shut off the electricity to the floor. Maybe someone with a save in that area could falche it and give us exact skill numbers?

This puzzle thing is the only thing in FO2 that I thought didn't really fit. I thought it was a little too much like a D&D kind of thing. In the modern (or future) world, if some evil mastermind didn't want you to get somewhere, they wouldn't use puzzle rooms, just more guards and tougher security measures.

I don't know...

I had my hacked char there about an hour ago with 290% repair skill. All it said was, "You can't repair that."

Did you try clicking on it, selecting inventory, and then selecting the tool?

I't important to actually use the tools on it, not the repair skill, nor the super toolkit. I don't recall the requirements (if any) though.

just switch to the arrow-head cursor (anyone know what its called?) and select inventory, and then choose your lether-man handy tool, and it should cut it and you get some exp, like 200 iirc.

you dont use repair on it, just the tool. you could put the tool in your item slot, and use it on the wire, but who's gonna do that?

and it does help a lot if your bad at that kinda puzzle
