I'm intrigued by the NPC party members. What degree of control do we have over them in combat and outside?

Yes. According to this the game is playable. As an old AD&D player I must say I'm pretty anxious to see what they've done, or else I'm bound to slap someone around a bit with a big salmon.

EDIT: Just found this. Maybe it clarifies something for someone?
