Childkiller?
I'm playing JA2 at the moment and something struck me as odd about it, which took me a while to work out why. I'ts got kids in it, now that might not suprise some of you from international waters, but to little old me here in the UK it seems so odd. FO & FO2 had to have the children removed over here so that the game could get released in Europe, seems someone in authority didn't like the idea of people intentionally ruining around shooting kids. I downloaded the child patch for FO2 and it makes so much difference to the game that it seems a shame that they had to censor it. Now the only reasons that people would want to shoot the kids is cause they thieving little bastards in FO2, I'm not sure about Fallout haven't found a patch for that yet, or if they're playing evil and want the childkiller trait.
So I wonder should the childkiller trait be dropped in Fallout 3? If there is no incentive to killing the little blighters then maybe they (the games designers) can produce a game that won't have to be censored for international release. Or would dropping the trait, even though those of us in Europe won't be able to get the most out of the game, be cutting the heart and soul out of the game?

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Maybe they could make killing children so horrible that you can't do anything in the game if you get childkiller. And maybe the children can disappear and fade into thin air when killed. Maybe that would please the censors.
The kids in Kalamath in FO2 are pretty cute. After I get liked they follow the funny tribal around and ask funny questions and what-not. I really think it helps with the feel.

I don't think it's a case of sloppy censoring, but because Fallout games give you a reason to want to kill the little ones, where as other games you might kill them accidently but there's no in-game reason to do so.VasikkA wrote:Why the hell wasn't Baldur's Gate censored? And that's what made me the weird, twisted and perverted freak I am today. Sloppy censors!

My earlier post was sarcasm.requiem_for_a_starfury wrote:I don't think it's a case of sloppy censoring, but because Fallout games give you a reason to want to kill the little ones, where as other games you might kill them accidently but there's no in-game reason to do so.
I'd like to know which in-game reason you mean...? Sure, I hated those thieving little bastards in The Den but it doesn't really encourage you to kill them, neither does the Childkiller reputation. Yet they didn't remove the porn, drugs and swearing although it was more obvious. You could play an evil path in Baldur's Gate and you could slaughter innocent children/women in the game just for the fun of it, and I think that's what RPGs are about: To roleplay with your character without limitations. Playing an evil character should be allowed. If there's good, there should be evil too.
So basically censorship=bad, but really offensive stuff such as harsh racism, child pornography etc should be removed. It's illegal and doesn't make a game better.

If you wanna go that route, then killing and drug possesion is illegal as well. Seeing as how that sentance probably lowered your opinion of me, i'll go ahead with another statement.
There are those, who, to test the limits of the game and see if they really can play any kind of char they want, kill the children and become slavers. This isn't a bad thing, they simply wish to explore all their options. For this reason, and a some sort of law that states the killing of minors may not be depicted in any media...or something..., censors deleted children from the fallout games. Hey, i like the fading kids idea, but what if you kill a child before you, say, have a rescue johnny quest, but after recieving the quest? Another bunch of hosed quests!

"Science fiction wiggers" is my new favorite phrase.
"You'd better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It's unpleasantly like being drunk."

"Ask a glass of water."

It's illegal to have racism and child porn IN THE GAME & ON THE SCREEN. It isn't illegal to have a picture of a dead person or heroine hypo on your hard drive isn't it? But it is illegal to have a plan *how* to kill all the black people from the world or photographs of naked children under the age of 18.
Damn, how I hate to state the obvious.

Well he sorta has a point. Nobody gives a shit if you do anything 'racist' towards white people or anything (IE Zimbabwe) but people are up in arms any other situation.paynetothemax wrote:el oh el... the humor is so biting here it hurts. Then, it's ok, right?
Reverse racism is rarely even acknowledged anywhere in the world.
But I'll shut up now as this can only lead to trouble.

The thing is, Aegeri, that when black folk are being racist towards whites, it's usually like "Damn, those pale-face monkeys are ruining our lives" and then they go get another beer from the fridge. When white folk are being racist, it's more like "Damn, those swell guy monkeys are ruining our lives" and then they go and hang a dozen blacks to the nearby tree.Aegeri wrote:Well he sorta has a point. The situation in Zimbabwe, for example, wasn't in publicity because US had no interest to go bomb that country The "revolution" was mocked by Europeans very hard and no one really accepted it, not even the black leaders of Southern-Africa.
Indeed. Funny? In certain times and places, yes. Annoying? Often... Threatening? As much as an army of duracel-bunnies.
But anyone who appriciates black humor even a little bit, should watch "THE original KINGS OF COMEDY". It's a wacky stage show of four black stand-up comedians, making jokes about things from ghetto to grave, spiced with self-irony and political issues. It's SheXY.

Incidently, I think giving a $50,000 dollar scholarship to Maori/Pacific islanders while only getting an average of 65% or better is racist. Especially when as a whitey, I need a near 90% average to get a $20,000 dollar scholarship (New Zealand).
But again, I'll shut up before I go to the point of no return, it only leads to trouble.
