Mad Max In Africa?

Post by Mad Max RW »

[ -> N/A]

According to Variety, Kennedy-Miller Productions will be filming Mad Max: Fury Road in Namibia, Africa. This has been rumored for a long time, so I am not too surprised. Here is what they had to say on the issue:

Kennedy Miller Productions, producer of Mad Max: Fury Road, in which Mel Gibson will reprise the role he created in 1979, have decided to film on location in Namibia, Africa rather than outback New South Wales, says Variety.

Panavision Australia topper Dennis Noonan says he believes they chose that African locale because they can accommodate the cast and crew much closer to the desert than is possible in Australia.

Noonan still hopes Panavision will get the chance to service the production in Namibia. Also, there's unconfirmed talk that "Fury Road" may shoot some interiors Down Under.

The release date for Fury Road is still July 23, 2004. They won't start filming until May at the earliest. The Antarctica rumor was nothing more than a rumor. It costs way too much to film there when you can get the same environment in Alaska while much closer to civilization. So right off the bat it sounded like bullshit.

The Namibia story was confirmed by Kennedy-Miller Productions.

Well, I guess it doesn't matter where they film it. Desert looks desert everywhere.

Welcome to the post-apocalyptic Australia. You can see the pyramids on the right and beduines on the left...

Not exactly. I still laugh my ass off everytime I see Conan the Destroyer since the desert scenes in that were filmed in northern Mexico and you see all sort of indigenous plants that aren't found anywhere else but there and southern Arizona.

Here is the latest rumour from Darkhorizons.com
"MAD MAX 4: FURY ROAD: Thanks to A Bazillion People. I hope this isn't true, mainly because I know some of the people working on this film and hope they aren't out of a job. Not to mention the fact I was looking forward to seeing Max on the big screen again. Love a good rev head movie! (By the way - if anyone out there works for Holden, my preferred colour of Ute is blue). Anyway, here's the scoop from Namibia ... not often you hear that at a movie site, is it?!

"THE US$104 million Mad Max movie 'Fury Road' starring Mel Gibson, which was originally set to be filmed in Namibia from May, has been postponed indefinitely, The Namibian has learned. Some reasons for the postponement include the looming war against Iraq and the improvement in the rate of the South African rand, which would make filming more costly, sources said. Angela Phillips, Location Production Manager of Moonlighting, yesterday said she could not comment on the movie plans. Phillips told The Namibian earlier this year that the final green light for the movie had not been given. Should the movie not continue it would be a shock not only to Moonlighting, but also many Namibian individuals and businesses at the coast.

Moonlighting, a South African production company that worked on the international feature film 'Beyond Border' shot in the Namib last year, had set up an office at Swakopmund with a team of about 50 South Africans and Australians to work on 'Fury Road'." Is this true? If you have the inside dirt, email me at adam@darkhorizons.com and we'll sort this baby out."

I read the the original article yesterday. It's a nonstory. There's no official word from Kennedy-Miller Productions, and nobody with any ties to the movie have said anything to confirm it. The only thing we know is filming will start around summer 2003 and most of the outdoor scenes will be in Namibia. The way they worded it is kinda ridiculous. It's obviously bullshit made to stur up controversy.

If you do believe it, here's a follow up:
http://www.namibian.com.na/2003/Februar ... 81EB9.html

All they say it what is already known. Fury Road will film from summer-late fall 2003. Like I said, it's a nonstory.
