[ -> N/A]

The post-apocalyptic FPS by Digitalo, ARUSH, and Groove Games went gold today and is expected in stores all over North America in the next couple of weeks. For a quick recap, Devastation takes place in the distant future where powerful corporations control the remnants of technology in a collapsing society. The game is powered by the latest Unreal engine as well as their own Karma physics engine. You have your standard deathmatch/team deathmatch, and a new mode of play called territories.

Keep your eyes peeled for the multiplayer demo in the next few days... possibly the 15th of this month.

Did you know...?

Do you think they made that money back already in licenses?

Quake originally sold for 1mil (with no royalties... It's actually one of the reasons people often end up using Unreal engine instead of a Quake based engine as it's less expensive...

There's also Lithtech engine which is even cheaper then Unreal's but it sucks badly, whew Q vs U engines are pretty similar in quality.

Right now the Q3 engine is $150k. Doom 3 will probably be upwards of $1mil

I said without royalities. I'm quite certain that at 150k there are plenty of royalties to pay...

The only reason I remember that is that I remember one of the id membets complaining about a certain company who bought a license fro their engine (not full price, they had royalties in the deal...) but this company wanted to "return" it since they ended up not doing anything with it (the team working on it just quit, and the project was going nowhere)...

Course that isn't exactly how things work :P
