Take all the numbers that have a center dot (IE, the three and five), and count the dots around them.
Which basicly means, every three is worth two points, and a five is worth 4 points.

Assuming the Dr in question is either a mathematician or a academic with a field of expertise closely associated with math, I'm not surprised by his alledged inability to solve it. Math is the antipode of art and as such characterised by a devoid of creativity. This, ofcourse is reflects on the people dealing with math.
