One or both of his parents were Finland-Swedish so he got baptized as Tony Christian Halme. I think no one ever made fun of his name, because at the 80's and 90's everything that sounded American in any way was considered über-cool and extremely good and reliable in every way imaginable. So it's actually a Swedish name (I think) but it's also an American-English name, so it only helped his image at that time.
