New Reno was cliched and that made it funny.DarkUnderlord wrote:New Reno and San Fran were two of the worst cliched cities of Fallout 2.
San Fran was cliched and that made it very unfunny.

San Fran always felt so unfinished to me. I enjoyed New Reno, though, due to the sheer amount of things you could do. It wasn't all that necessary to completing the game, which I like and thought added a whole lot to the role playing element. And then, of course, that stupid Fallout 2 strategy guide book under the bench that you could get after beating the game.Nicolai wrote:I liked New Reno, but hated San Fran.

other than nice quests, stolen car, gunfire-in-the-dictance sound, New Reno was important for it's mening in the Fo2 world - relations withother places - in terms of economy, politics, trade (chemicals for jet etc) and such. I liked the links that bound Fo2 world together - I'd hate isolated unrelated places.
So is there a patch that rids New Reno of the easter eggs? That would fix the most-complained-about problem with the location, wouldn't it.
edit: BTW, I haven't been watching the forum very carefully the last few days - is Jesus a Meg alter? Or whose?

Having played the game countless times made me realize how well New Reno is designed. As PiP said, relations with Vault City, NCR(quests and background info), the complex relations between the families, some kick-ass quests(Bishop-Westin dealio, Sierra Army Depot, Golgotha...). It's all carefully thought through. Also, the memorable characters like Mrs Bishop and Father Tully just to name a few.
The morons over at Codex are nitpicking(as usually) on whether the level of organized crime as it was in New Reno would fit in Fallout's 'non-organized' societal structure. I don't find the organized crime in New Reno implausible, as even the lowest of intellectual lifeforms can turn crime into business. The only design glitches in New Reno was the blatant amount of profanity/drugs/sex, easter eggs and gangster clichés, which combined is a rather big issue.

I didn't like the fact casinos and families looked like they were straight out of a mafia movie. What the fuck are Italians doing in Nevada? It was like one big easter egg altoghether(which it probably was). I would've prefered more wastelandish crime bosses like Gizmo in Junktown.PiP wrote:well the drug theme was largely what bound the world together. And hookaz and casions? What would you expect from a post-apoc Vegas wannabe?
And like you said, people getting themselves organized for crime's sake is quite plausible. There's some 'gangs' everywhere. It's like tribes really.
What bothered me about New Reno was that they were "criminal".
WTF is that? Without law and order there is no reference point for gauging
criminality.
So the "crime families" should have been just different factions.
Maybe there were enough surviving records/etc. to give people
an idea of right and wrong/etc.
So the "crime families" knew that they were somehow wrong.
But that's weak.
P'raps operating within the outer spheres of Vault City and NCR authority
gave them the order differential necessary to define themselves.
The doctor in V15 says he was heading to New Reno for R&R...
New Reno filled a niche in the PA economic and social ecology.
so it all starts to make a little sense...

oh it's not just "a little."
Anyhow, I don't think people need "records" to have an idea of right and wrong. After the war, they would have probably needed them to set themselves against the background of the organised crime tradition.
I'd say (/agree) that the families of new reno looked too much like the pre-war mafia/gangs. Even if they had a notion of what that had been, they shouldn't be identical but, conversely, be more of "generic gangs" (because starting anew as opposed to continueing something else) with a post-apoc touch, taking only a little from the "tradition."
And yea, I think they (the families) are essentialy factions! surprise surprise...
