Hammerdins may look boring, but they are tons of fun. However, you are right, they are probably not too good without top-end equipment. However, I would still suggest a Smiter. The thing about Smite is that even though you use your shield to hit the opponent, it's actually your weapon that loses durability. Don't ask me why they made it like that. Anyway, to give you basic guidelines, here is what to do for each build. I cannot give equipment choices (since you cannot trade on single player), but I can say what to aim for. Here we go:
Hammerdin:
skills:
20 Blessed Hammer
20 Concentration
20 Vigor
20 Blessed Aim
20 eerm cannot remember the last one ¬¬, look at the synergies.
rest into Holy Shield
stats:
STR enough for gear
DEX enough for max block with Holy Shield active
VIT rest
ENE none
Hammerdins do up to 17k damage with top end gear. Concentrate on FCR (faster cast rate) and +skills equipment. Have Concentration as your active aura, as it increases hammer damage. Put Blessed Hammer under left click.
Smiter:
skills:
20 Smite
20 Fanatiscm
20 Holy Shield
20 Defiance
rest into Charge
STR: enough for gear
DEX: enough for max block with Holy Shield
VIT: rest
ENE: none
Concentrate on finding a shield with nice Smite damage. Fanatiscm as main aura, Smite under left click.
Zealer:
stats: same as above
skills:
20 Zeal
20 Sacrifice
20 Fanatiscm
20 Holy Shield
20 Defiance
Find a nice 1h weapon and a decent paladin shield. Fana main aura, Zeal under left click.
Also, if you are into PvP, there is a great build out there, called V/T (Vindicator/Templar) which basically means a Smite/FoH (Fist of Heavens) hybrid. Let me know if any of you play on the internet and I'll tell you how to set one up.

Yeah but D2 went buggy on me any time I alt-tabbed or anything like that. And that's a major disadvantage when you really really want to hack demons to newyorknewyork.ogg I imagine if I were to install it on one of my new rigs... but I've had my fill of that game for ever I think.
Most fun ever-- using Messer's Reaver to cleave hellspawn in Diablo the First with Sammy Davis Jr. and co. crooning in the background.
I get no HACK! GURGLE! kick from CHOP! champagne HORK! HORK!
Plus D2 was so goddamned big. And I hated going to jungle world and shit, like I'm fucking Indiana Jones or something. At least it had some replay value in playing the same exact game and killing the same exact cows over and over and over and over and over again though. Oh and mercs blew. Fuck 'em, they're stupid shits and all they manage to do is rile up the monsters and give you a harder time. Or just stand there, all gay and stupid and in the way, thumb planted firmly between ass cheeks, staring blankly with lifeless bot eyes.
My necro, Rodney, got up to around level 70 before I said goodbye to D2. He had the complete set of fucking PALADIN armor, and his bone spear was fucking unstoppable. Anyways my beef with Rodney was I had only two choices: I could go mid-level fighter, which I did, or I could be a weakling mage-thing and summon an army of swell guy to suck and serve me.
I'm happy that D3 talk is going 'back to basics,' back to one guy hacking his way to hell through a cave near your local hamlet's cow pasture.

Well, necros aren't all that good at PvM. By getting buggy after you ALT-TAB, do you mean that all the colours get messed up? That's easily fixed by changing the resolution to 640x480 and then back to 800x600.
PvM becomes fun in Diablo when you have a char that can cut through mobs in a matter of milliseconds.
Mercs are actually very important. Most "mage" style characters throw the Insight polearm on merc, meaning that they constantly have an aura that replenishes their mana. Sorcs have Infinity on merc, reduces enemies resistances. My Wind Druid has Reaper's Toll on merc (reduces enemies physical resistances and removes physical immunity) and there are many more combos (hammerdins have Lawbringer + Pheonix on merc, etc).
I hope that you played LOD (the expansion) because there you can equip your mercs and they level with you, etc (although they can never get higher than you). At level 96, my merc is a pretty fine killing machine.

Your attack speed is way too slow. If you are keen on that idea, though, go for Zeal + Fanatiscm and use the runeword Doom as a weapon (gives Holy Freeze aura) but that it's impossible to get the runes together for that in Single Player.
Doom:

For killing. Zealers already have such low damage that they absolutely must reach the final IAS (increased attack speed) breakpoint if they want to achieve anything.

I completely disagree. At the moment, the best character I have for PvM is a summoning necro decked out with the Enigma runeword.
Basically with level 41 raise skeleton and level 43 skeleton mastery, I have an army of 15 skeleton warriors and 9 mages, each with roughly 6,000 life and doing ~700-800 damage with my might merc.
Each.
The fun part about Enigma is that it gives +1 Teleport for any character. This lets me teleport around the map on top of monsters, concentrating all of my skeleton goodness into a single attack.
Once my skeletons start killing monsters all I have to do is spam corpse explosion and I clear screens in a matter of seconds.

Yeah, obvious. 90% of chars are worthless with Enigma. The fact is that your summoner is capable of dealing out damage with pretty much top notch gear (also, use Beast runeword as a weapon, your skellies will also get Fanatiscm, more dam + IAS).
Spend equal amount on another char and they will tear thourgh everything much, MUCH quicker. I.e. make a hammerdin, 17k damage, basically nothing can stop you in PvM.

Go check how much cold damage is added from Holy Freeze and Resist Cold synergy.
Or whatever these names were, I'm too lazy to climb Arreat Summit...

Buriza is a good budget weapon for PvM, but it's not good really. Best Druids use ethereal perfect Tomb Reaver with Zod and 2x15/40s. Also, you can get an even rarer Polearm from, but you could only cube those in 1.08, so they are ultra rare nowadays. I was just looking around and found a video of a Fury Druid dueling a Hammerdin, here it is:

Depends on skill level, however, you may rest assured that it's not enough.

The odds of getting a drop in D2 are Dont Even Bother out of Your Asshole is Sore and Bleeding (translation: slightly less than 0/always). The best rune drop I have ever seen is like Ist.

Getting godly in Diablo is not a problem if you know how to do it.
