Spazmo wrote:The 5900's have already been reviewed. They stink. So much, in fact, that NVIDIA decided to cheat at 3DMark 2003 to fool people into thinking their card was worth a damn.
Even better, ATI is beating NVIDIA at it's own game. everyone knows Dawn, the NVIDIA tech demo of a little fairy type creature. Well, some students at MIT took Dawn and added a wraparound (a sort of graphics emulator) that would let ATI cards render Dawn. The ATI 9xxx boards severely outperformed equivalent NVIDIA cards. Keep in mind, also, that a wraparound, just like any emulator, actually slows down the performance of the hardware.

omg is that true? Did you even read my posts? lol...
Scroll up and looky looky, I even linked teh nude patch =P
If DAC ever needed a topic, this wouldnt of been it.
What the fuck are you talking about? Lets get serious for just a moment(and I hardly do that): What, is, the, fucking, difference? and more importantly: Who gives a rat's ass? I consider myself a somewhat knowledgable person, or at least, an above average one, on the whole computer hardware thingamie, and I never in my entire life gave a crap on what company manufactured my video card. There's REALY not much difference between them, as far as I can tell. I tried comparing mine and my friend's, in visualized aspects I mean, and could find little to no change.
All that matters, to me(and if you ask me, to anyone), is how much a company supports you if a problem arises, compatibility(I dont know if this qualifies for a problem in this generation though) and the prices. If it has the same memory or whats not, I do not give a fuck on who made it.
Its like arguing on what company's memory chip is better... Im sure there's a difference in there somewhere, but its so minimal that the only people who notice it need to get out more.

Well, believe it or not, there is.
It sounds to me like you're not interested in this topic, in that case, why do you bother?
I *do* give a rats ass, and apparently, other people do to,
and since this *entire* board consist of gamers, I'd say it's got a lot to do with DAC. Don't like it: Don't read it.
What's the difference? A mighty heap of money, that's what. When I have to choose between a $500 card or a $300 card that outperforms the first one, I think the difference becomes somewhat important.
But is there REALY a difference, Spazmo? I know there is between a 300 and a 500 card, but lets take two cards of the same price from two diffrent companies... Would you even notice the difference? They should be of the same abilities more or less given that they're at the same price.
That's just the thing: they should be much the same, but they're not. NVIDIA boards are inferior to ATI's product by a significant margin. It just makes sense to me to buy the better product at the same price. When running high detail games at high resolutions with lots of anti aliasing and aniotropic filtering, the difference becomes staggering.

Could you be a bit more specific?
Yeah, very clever. If you noticed, I said I dont even know whats the difference between one video card and the other, but talk to me about CD-ROMs, memory chips, and hard drives, and I'll have a better insight of what your average Joe knows.
Its a 3D Blaster Banshee something something. The computer is secretly a russian spy, he refuses to give in the remaining information.
I don't like to team up with any. ATI has a long running history of release weird hardware, while NVDA is heading the marketing way (perhaps enheriting it from it's purchase of TDFX?). Basically I'll trust the game benchmarks of the cards when they come out.
The last card I bought was an ATI (for my father) since for the same performance it was cheaper even though the feature set might not have been as extensive.
Since the 256 mb 5900 and the 256 mb radeon 9800 are even, its a kick-up. But it all comes down to reliability in the past and most of the present. That moves over to the nVidia camp for me. Not a fanboy, but I like to stick with what works. That'd be nVidia for me. Never really could stand the off and on instability or stability of the ATI cards anyways.
But I won't be upgrading till October or November, so I'm sure by then the 6000 nVidia cards will be out or something, and prices will be down from $400-500 range to the $200-350 range. Especially since the only games I foresee to push the envelope that I'll be playing will be S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Doom III and Deus Ex 2.
BTW, to the person claiming that nVidia cheated in the benchmark tests with their new 5900 cards: you are wrong. The benchmarks didn't even USE the new detonators that had the code cheats. So get your facts straight, or don't even bitch, since you are probably just some Radeon fanboy. ATI has bad code cheats in their new catalyst drivers too. Or do you not read EVERYTHING?
3dMark isn't a game. It isn't optimized for gaming, and the new version doesn't even utilize your CPU or system RAM. Most games utilize more than just the GPU. This is why 3dmark is the poorest piece of shit software for people to judge performance with. Hell, you could have the best ATI or nVidia card on the market, but if you put it in a shit system, you won't have any positive effects.
As for ATI being the "official sponsor of Half-Life 2!!!" - who the hell cares? In the end, Valve will optimize for all cards on the market. All game companies do that, or else they'd be in a load of trouble with potential purchasers of their products. Also, it has been stated that Valve will optimize Half-Life to even run on the lowest of low-end machines of current standards - take that how you will. So basically, ATI being the official sponsor in that respect doesn't mean jack shit. That'd be like me saying I'm the official taste tester of coke, but I drink pepsi at home and enjoy it just as much.
Oh yeah, Spazmo...he's not talking out of his mouth. He's talking out his ass. Listen to him if you like, but he's apparantly not the genius he thinks he is when it comes to PC hardware. He's just another fanboy.
So yeah, do your research and do it WELL. Don't listen to fanboys like spazmo. Don't listen to employees at Best Buy, Circuit City or CompUSA. Don't even listen to the false advertisement that ATI is trying to lure everybody in with running Half-Life 2 so awesomely. Look at track record, reliability and compatibility. If you have gone with nVidia now, why switch to ATI? If you go with ATI, why switch to nVidia? Go with what YOU know works. If you think its time for a change, go for it. But I can tell you right now: Now is not the time to switch from nVidia to ATI. I'd say wait a year or so when they finally get ALL the kinks worked out of their Catalyst drivers so they aren't still in the realm of shit.

Regarding drivers, I've had problem with several version released by nvidia for my gforce2mx - in fact the current drivers still have problems with non other then Fallout2! every XX seconds, the screen kind of flashes in a lighter colour... Back in the 2.X version of the drivers this didn't happen, and the bug is still there.
I've had to rollback drivers to play Arx Fatalis.
It burned not 1 but two of my viewsonic screens! during video mode changes. (both fixed now thankfully and free of charge).
On top of it I gave my father my old TNT card (to replace his old 3dfx card, before I got him a new ATI card) and the only game he cared about would crash every minute or so with it (while it worked on the 3dfx and works fine on the ATI).
The worst I had with ATI was shacky VGA support back in the DOS days, and the worst regarding driver releases I've hear is that the newer Catalyst drivers don't work properly with it's new (unreleased) video card (hell if I care - it's not out!).

Well said. I hope to see some fine products from NVidia =)
More competition, and better cards from ATI, then from NVidia, and so forth...
What I don't get, is why you flame spazmo.
I'm glad someone finally put up a decent reply, but this is discussion, not an insulting arena.
