Whilst a war on Iraq may not be a very good idea, I disagree that it would be for oil. This is based on three assumptions:A war on Iraq would be nothing short of a war for oil.
1) It would cause oil prices to rise, thus being counterproductive. How ever much we may mock Dubya, I'm sure he has advisors who realise this.
2) Like you said, there is no oil supply problem.
3) Its more likely about WMD. Iraq has demonstrated the resolve and ability to both make and use WMD. Their nuclear program was frighteningly advanced.

The net result in these terms for Afghanistan was a massive increase in democracy.
And, given the complexity of the situation in Iraq, there would be no simple easy way to install a democratic government. If Hussein was killed, then some other like him would almost certainly take his place. There would need to be some long term restructuring.
I don't think the US public is ready for such a commitment.
