Kind of. You start off in someone else's body, and if you die, your soul can move on to another character. But you lose all your items, and if you trained in combat and stuff, you gotta do it again. Depending on the body you pick. The nurse will be weaker than the cop, for example.

omikron has those shitty half assed 3d square people though. not that i could stand playing it for more than an hour but thats another issue.

i liked harbinger. its alright if you dont want deep, deep story and you wanna look for items and figure out what the hell is going on.

it kinda plays like a 50s sci-fi novel.

role:Barbarian,race:Human,gender:male,align:neutral
Barbarians are pretty easy to play I've heard, and as I've never beat the game I thought it would be pretty good choice, just kill everyone and stuff, plus they're liek hardcore?

I'm playing a valkriye dwarf female lawful right now, but I try to play everything.
I'm still in the middle of the game, so I don't know my score, but I just got through sokoban, so it looks like it's going to be one of my better runs.

ah that sounds good, I wish you luck! it gets pretty hard around the castle level or so though. I still think sokoban was a shitty addition - I use a walkthru everytime I get to it :P

I figured out the first levels on my own before I gave in. I like sokoban, though. A fun puzzle distraction. My only problem with it is that I've got to be really really careful. I accidently pushed one boulder one space too far and screwed my luck over.

You kill the troll!
You see here a troll corpse.
There is a troll corpse here; eat it? [ynq] (n)
This troll corpse tastes terrible! You stop eating the troll corpse.
(at this point i kicked the corpse to the lake)
The bite-covered troll rises from the dead!
The troll drowns.

pwned?

I always play an Elven ranger as they always spot secret tunnels and doors. I used to play as a barbarian or night however I found that there were levels where I was totally stuck because I could not see these secret passages.

with regards to finishing the game, I remember reading somewhere once that this has never actually beeen done.

EDIT: ha ha "night", I mean knight [gotta stop posting when i'm blind drunk].

you do know about s, right?

S = search

Don't worry, it took me a week before a friend of mine told me that I wasn't stuck and just had to (S)earch around for the secret passages.

I like my lawful valkryie, because as soon as I found a fountain I dipped my long sword and got an Excalibur. Auto-searching, better searching, level-drain resist, and a really badass weapon for so early in the game. I think you have to be a certain level before you can get your sword to change, though.

#dip longswords into fountains... I wouldn't suggest dipping it if it's your primary weapon though as it will most probably just get very rusty.
In my last game (164777 points, new highscore woo) I got the Cleaver by sacrificing a lot to my god Crom. #offer fresh bodies on your altar, #pray:ing on altars is a lot more useful too than normal prayers (you get rid of curses and stuff). Just don't overdo it... bleh, just experiment and get killed in very stupid ways. Or read spoilers like these like I do :D Lame? Perhaps, but Nethack is such a huge fucking game and I don't have the time to learn all that shit by trial&error. Actually instead of spoiling I think they've made the game funner for me as I don't always die on like level 5 anymore. It's not like the game becomes super-easy if you read them from time to time, heh

Thanks for that, there's so much stuff I didn't know. I was also wondering, when you die, do you automatically lose the savegame?

yup
unless you cheat

There's no reloading and saving if something goes wrong or you die. IF you die you're dead. Unless you save scum.
