Speaking of serving the ol' homeland, I've gotta sign up for the draft.

My ass. I don't want the entire draft reinstated. Maybe a "limited draft". Something like this:fallout ranger wrote:that bill was defeated... damn rich kids...
When you graduate high school, or turn 18 (whichever comes first, as long as you are not in high school when you turn 18), you will be recruited into the U.S. Army for a period of two years. For training only. You will not leave the U.S. without your own permission. After the two years, you can either reenlist, or leave and go back to civilian life.
You will now be a trained citizen-soldier, and will be called upon in the most extreme circumstances to put the uniform back on and serve again. Such as the U.S. being invaded by a foreign power.
I would support something like that.
Hmmm... kinda like an organized militia?MurPHy wrote:My ass. I don't want the entire draft reinstated. Maybe a "limited draft". Something like this:fallout ranger wrote:that bill was defeated... damn rich kids...

American's have the right to enlist if they want. And they have the right not to enlist if they don't. That's why this is a terrible idea.MurPHy wrote: My ass. I don't want the entire draft reinstated. Maybe a "limited draft". Something like this:

The book (NOT the movie) Starship Troopers revolves mostly around the theme of military enlistment, and contains a pretty good argument against forcing people to join up.
Mainly, it boils down to the fact that the military doesn't want to train people who don't want to be trained. It's a waste of time, because people who don't want to be in the military won't pay too much attention to training, so in order to train them properly the instructors have to put a lot more effort into it.

What are you a fucking moron? Oh. Sorry. It's you. I should've guessed. Why would you want the draft? And the fact that the bill was defeated (and was never intended to pass in the first place), has nothing to do with the fact that you have to register for the draft. History has proven that drafted armies are ineffective.fallout ranger wrote:that bill was defeated... damn rich kids...
And Megatron. You... no. Just no. That's like that moron Wilson (yes, former president Woodrow) that decided to sign the international law making war illegal. How KAWAII ^______________________________^

Something like that. It would replace the National Guard, which is near worthless anyways.Som Guy wrote:Hmmm... kinda like an organized militia?
Or simply rename the National Guard the X Guard, or X Militia.
X = pick a state.
New Jersey Militia/Guard. Under the control of the individual states, and the Federal government will have absolutely NO power or control, unless the country was invaded, and the independent militias needed to be joined together in an Army for defense.
I would support that too.
I can see where you are coming from with that. Being able to have a choiice in the matter is important to you.Retlaw wrote:American's have the right to enlist if they want. And they have the right not to enlist if they don't. That's why this is a terrible idea.
There are both pros and cons to training EVERYBODY, but I will not bother to list the pros here (I'm too lazy). What I proposed is pure conjecture, as both Houses of Congress would likely never enact such a thing. Or reinstate the draft for that matter. So although this discussion is certainly interesting, it is highly unlikely that anything of the sort will ever happen. Our Army will remain an all-volunteer one.Mainly, it boils down to the fact that the military doesn't want to train people who don't want to be trained. I don't necessarily want the draft, It's just that little rich kids need a taste of real life. And we all know the draft is the only way they'll ever go into the military. Let me say this again for the stupid people I DON'T NECESSARILY WANT THE DRAFT
Like I've said before, they will never re-instate the draft, because it would make the general population unhappy, therefore making it unlikely that the pres who starts th draft will be re-elected. There would have to be an EXTREME circumstaqnce for them to fire up the draft again. The only way I see that happening is a major war with N. Korea.

does this work
We currently have a guy in ROTC who is the grandson of a multi-millionaire. This guy is so rich that he and his extended family live in a compound containing a private airfield. If anyone has Microsoft Flight Simulator, you can find it as Brennan Airfield in Pennsylvania. It doesn't look anything like it does in real life, but that's at least proof of its existence.fallout ranger wrote:I don't necessarily want the draft, It's just that little rich kids need a taste of real life. But I digress. Many rich kids do enter the military. One kid I know who is currently going to school while getting paid $90,000 a summer for working for his dad was required, by his father, to first do a six-year enlistment in the Navy. Another kid I know whose family is filthy rich with old money is also currently in ROTC, and his father is currently a major in the Army.

The problem with a having anything but a volunteer army is that they won't really want to be fighting, and to be there. However the training idea is interesting becuase I assure you nearly everyone will want to prevent our country from being taken over. However the likelyhood of such a thing ever happening is insane.
Yeah, never going to happen.....again.Som Guy wrote:However the training idea is interesting becuase I assure you nearly everyone will want to prevent our country from being taken over. However the likelyhood of such a thing ever happening is insane.
Oh no! The British are coming!
Has anyone seen the HistoryChannel stuff on the War of 1812? Very cool. They're making a movie too, called "First Invasion". I wanna see it. More then I wanna see any hollywood blockbuster for the next five years.

No, not realy. At first I was placed in a combat unit, but I manged to avoid that in a matter of weeks, and became a medic.
Then, I spent the rest of my service telling people to shove it when they wanted to see a doctor, stealing medicine(QUITE A SASSY COLLECTION, BABY!), and stabbing people with needles.
And I didn't even finish my service full time. Joining the army is the dumbest thing a robot can do.
