Man, can you imagine what that would do to an elephant? Which is clearly the animal it was designed to poach... er kill.
That thing is the equivalent of an over-the-shoulder cannon for fuck sakes. I can only imagine it was that big because it was some pre-1900 firearm and the technology simply wasn't there to produce ballistics in a smaller cartrige to do the same damage.
Seeing an elephant get hit with something like that would probably be akin to driving a garbage truck into it much less piercing it with a giant spear.
