Old doesn't necessarily mean bad, you can just expect it to be a hell of alot slower since it was before MTV and subsequent "MTV Editing" that is so prevalent in movies now. Also if a movie is esteemed it doesn't mean that if someone likes it they like it purely because of it's status. I personally don't like Citizen Kane but I respect it, Lawrence of Arabia however I find very entertaining and can still watch today. I just think it is a great movie. Of course I wouldn't have sought it out had I not heard of it, and I certainly woudln't have heard of it had it not been such an esteemed film.

That is how I find alot of older movies I enjoy, I will hear that they are classics and will watch them and in doing so discover older directors and actors and then seek out their lesser known works which often far exceed the more acclaimed ones. I don't do this out of some urge to seem witty but rather a genuine love of movies. It's kind of like when some cuntbag says Morrowind is the greatest RPG ever and he has only been playing games since '99. That certainly puts a bug up us Fallout fans asses. There is nothing wrong with expanding your vocabulary, no matter what field you are in. However there are always going to be lowlives who only do so to seem witty or superior.

It was inscribed "Rosebud".

So, therefore... Citizen Kane is a Fallout subject by chain of association.

Yea, I got your idea from the very poll, no need to make it 'simple', dude. This is sad and largely true. However I do know some exceptions to your 'rule'; yeah, there are still young people who like 'high culture' because of their intellectual quality and, despite all the mobbing and detest from their less interesting peers, can't be called 'swell guy' but rather robust, precious human beings.

Anybody can be called "swell guy", or anything else.
The truth or untruth of a thing doesn't deny the ability to make the
accusation.
I assume that the word "swell guy" is some kind of generic derogative
that has no neccessary connection to homosexuality.
A multi- or even omni- use term.
Like saying something is "gay" to indicate lameness/stupidity/etc.
Those terms also have similar generic uses unrelated to their formal,
logical meanings.

You swell guy.

swell guy.
Spicwop.
NMAer.

Ok, I take the last one back.

No one deserves that.

Liking Citizen Kane is alright, just don't tell us we're dumb because we're not in love with it.

sorry, but you didn't get it Redeye: I used the word "swell guy" with the same meaning as you did - "generic derogative" - and precisely refering to your very words (hence the same meaning - it's a reference, almost a quoation from your post) but presenting my point of view.
So let me make it simple, in my personal opinion there are people (and I know examples) around 20 who appreciate films like Citizen-Kane and at the same time cannot (in my p.o. mind you) be called *generic derogative* since I find them (those whom I know) interesting, physically and intellectually healthy, and just alright in general.

And Susan, I totally agree with you on your last point. Myself I sometimes don't really enjoy some esteemed cultural artefacts such as films.

Perhaps you're wrong, what reason would a person have for liking such a terrible movie besides being all :drunk: when really it's more like D: It's like che guevara but the next step up okay? Stop being friends with them pip, they will doom you to an eternity of thick glasses and brown shoes.

Bad Taste was an awesome movie, though not very high culturally speaking.

it's sure possible! but from anybody's perspective but mine, like in anybody else's case. We're all inevitably subjective and my taste is good by my yardsticks. It's impossible to be the contrary.

Some people will say they like something, even when they don't really like it, just to sound like they have sophisticated tastes. I've been guilty of this... for instance, I've told people "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is one of my favorite sci-fi movies, even though I honestly think it's boring as hell.

That's already been mentioned a few times in this thread, but thanks for sharing. Interestingly enough, sometimes it's the other way round: people will say they don't like something commonly known as a vintage esteemed shit, just to seem so sophistcated in a "this guy is so smart he dares to criticise the 'masterpiece' and doesn't jump on the bandwagon" kind of way. I was guilty of it once or twice a few years back.

And some people say they hate something while secretly loving it just so they don't look like complete retards. I've been guilty of this also D:
