This shit happened the last time this topic came up: Pearl Harbor doesn't count as overrated because nobody is overrating it. Everyone acknowledges how horrible it was. For a movie to be overrated, people have to like it.

Making a blatantly patriotic WWII movie would have been really cool if it was tongue in cheek ("How did you beat all those jerries, Sarge?" "They just weren't American enough, son."), but Pearl Harbor was largely serious and completely ruined by the shitty romantic plot. Go see Tora! Tora! Tora! instead.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

I had to puke when Cuba Gooding Jr started the mandatory 'black soldiers were also patriotic and heroic' part shooting and yelling in slow motion.
God what a horrid piece of suck. I think the best part is when Ben Affleck gets hosed after the Doolittle Raid. The only reason for them adding the raid was because if they didn't all the idiot teens would think the fucking Japanese won the war. You could tell it was just tacked on the end. Like they did a test screening and everyone was like, "wait, so the Japanese won World War 2? Was Hitler Japanese?" So they quickly filmed that end bit with the raid.

FUN FACT: in junior high I was got into an argument with a veteran who flew on the Doolittle Raid over how they did it. I knew he was a veteran and I knew he was on the raid, I just think he was getting old and senile.

The movie wasn't for old people or super-patriots, it was for shithead teens. Look at who's in it and in what positions. If there's any masturbation going on it's on the part of 15 year old girls. It was just the latest "war movie" to fall out of Hollywood's ass, and studies show that World War 2 is a very popular war to make movies of.
Wolfman Walt wrote:Pearly Harbor wasn't so much a movie as much as my eyes being raped by blantant over patriotic messages and romance. It doesn't qualify as being mentioned.
A girl in high school used a scene from it in her senior presentation as her visual aid. She wanted to be a nurse and said the movie inspired her to become one because of the nurses in it during the attack. I wanted to throw something at her fat ass.

Watch Tora! Tora! Tora!. It's basically the same movie, but with less patriotism and romance.

Good actors does not necessarily guarantee good acting. Even Anthony Hopkins has phoned it in on occasion.
Aonaran wrote: Alien had one of the more original plots in Science Fiction film.
Actually, the plot is lifted almost entirely from the '50s sci-fi classic It! The Terror From Beyond Space. Even the creators of Alien have cited this as a source.
Aonaran wrote: Alien concluded with a half naked Sigourney Weaver fighting one of the most original and menacing monsters in film (credit to HR Giger) in a battle of wits. Aliens had a mech, a giant alien and a big explosion.
I seem to remember the original ending with a big explosion, too. And how is bashing the alien with a mech any less a "battle of wits" than jettisoning the alien into space? Also, "Get away from her, you bitch!" is one of the best, and most cathartic, one-liners in film history. And I know you said you're not a fan of one-liners, but...come on. You had to have cheered just a little bit at that moment. We all did.

I agree that the original is nice in its simplicity, and it's the scarier of the two, for sure. But the sequel takes the whole thing to another level. The plot has more twists, the characters are more distinct, and the finale is ten times more suspenseful. Even Ripley's scene at the beginning when she discovers what happened to her daughter is a nice touch (too bad it was cut from the original release).

I guess it's mostly a matter of preference. Mostly.

kill bills definately. Fun to watch. But are the flicks something extraordinary? No.
Just mediocre cut n paste from other films and washout stars jumping the bandwagon for 'cult fame'.

Yeah but then you have the retarded fanboys who squirt all over themselves and defend any movie Tarantino makes as the word of God. As a fun hack and slash action movie Kill Bill does pretty good. But then you have the fanboys who shit thier pants if you speak ill of it.

The same goes for just about anything else the guy makes.

Aonaran wrote:I agree about Gladiator, it was a piece of shit.
Gladiator is a stunning masterpiece. The performances from Crowe and Joachin Phoenix are absolutely flawless. The musical score is beautiful and the visuals are powerful and immersive. The characters are dynamic and very real, and the editing and cinematography are first class. It's true that the story is nothing new, but its themes are timeless and thought-provoking nonetheless. And did I mention the brutally realistic battle scenes?

Take back the "piece of shit" comment, or risk losing your credibility forever.

Gladiator was better when it was called Ben Hur.

Oh and anything with Tom Hanks is overrated. He was a horn-dog comedy pioneer (Bachelor Party, Boosom Buddies), now he does all this mawkish soap opera shit. I can almost remember a time when guys like him, Eddie Murphy and Jim Carey actually made people laugh.

Gladiator was a let down to me. So dreadfully sentimental and shit. The best historical movie ever imo probably is Emperor and Assassin. Now that's a masterpiece. And Braveheart too.

...

Anything with Jet Li is bad and overrated.
