Beermaking kit is lame - it becomes expensive, quality is inconsistent,
and it requires too much patience for a small return. I just like the
idea of it. So what else? Get one CD each from several different
stores, burn them to CD-RWs and then damage them with heat warping
(subtle) or light sanding. Return claiming manufacturing defects - not
scratches. Maybe get away with it and use the cash for something
else.
But seriously, mischief items might work. A dog whistle can be quite
entertaining, but that would be the "cute thing on the side".

I thought Subhuman was #1. Probably not, but it just seemed that way
to me.

oh, that's right. they actually sell those at the square right down from my apartment, and i've wanted one for myself as i've walked by. i'll give it some thought, thanks.
