OMG, nobody mentioned one of the GREATEST games of ALL TIME:
Heroes of Might and Magic 1/2/3
^^^ It's great! What's not to love? Though I think Heroes 4 kinda sucked
Also, you guys forgot about the single greatest puzzle game of all time: The Incredible Machine! TIM!
As for Perfect Dark, the single player pawned Golden Eye's single player, but Perfect Dark's multiplayer was definitely inferior.
Here's my list:
Heroes 1/2/3
Warcraft 1/2
Starcraft
Diablo 2
Civilization 2
Tribes 1
Betrayal at Krondor
TIM
Fallout 1/2
Zelda (up through Ocarina)
Metroid (gameboy version)
GAMES I HATE:
Tribes 2
Heroes 4
Return to Krondor
FO:T
GAMES I WANT TO TRY:
Morrowind
Civ 3
PS:T
Not really a complete list, but it's the meat of it.

Nah, I don't think so. The biggest flaw of combat is the total lack of useful missile weapons, but that can be fixed with modding (and hey, the game comes with an easy to use editor!).
The dialog... Well, it's a system you have to get used to, because on the other hand when I first got involved in Fallout I disliked it mostly because of the "crappy" way it handled character interferance. I don't think it's so crappy anymore.
The involvement with the character might be right, but then again there are tons of possibilities how to develope your char. I think that compensates it pretty well.
And the world? Well you're involvement with the world in Fallout must be zero then as well. There are few lines of code that make some allies of your enemies also hate you etc. etc. but that's no less than in Fallout.

All the combat in Morrowind sucks. It's just click-swing click-swing click-swing ad nauseum. And that's not necessarily bad: it works really well in Diablo 2. But Morrowind makes it very, very dull.
It's far less than in Fallout. In Fallout, I felt I mattered in FO because I actually got to say things instead of just clicking on words that might interest me in particular. The fact that pretty much every person in the gameworld had the exact same things to say about the exact same topics of conversation didn't help much either. I can't exactly describe why, but Morrowind just felt extremely static and dull.
Besides that, the quests were really shitty. Endless variations on "Go kill [insert fantasy name #563247 here]". Just a terrible RPG.

I found it at Gamestop for $10. Going to pick it up today.

I completely agree with your asessment of Morrowind, since I have it for Xbox. The only real "freedom" the game allows, which everyone brags about endlessly, is the ability to walk from place to place [exterior] without any loading screens. If that's a definition of freedom, than I guess Morrowind achieves that sucessfully. But it severely lacks character choices which I think is a better aspect of "freedom", either your a noble hero or an extreme villian; there is no middle ground in terms of the choices you make in the game. The "evil" option is basically killing everything in sight. The game also usually has only one way to solve each quest. On the subject of lame combat, it definately sucks bad. The game balancing is woefully off-base, it's a little difficult in the beginning, but by the middle of the game you're basically a god, and can almost never be killed. The items in this game are like Baldur's Gate II, except on steroids. If you thought that game had too many powerful items, Morrowind takes it to the extremes. You can even find the third most powerful sword in about 15 minutes or so into the game. The quests in Morrowind are consist mainly of "FedEx" type quests; "get me this and bring it back here..." etc. 85% of the quests are either asassinations or delivery-quests.Spazmo wrote:All the combat in Morrowind sucks. Morrowind is a good Adventure game, but I wouldn't really call it an RPG because the lack of any role-playing. You're either the most noble hero or a viscious killer who slays anything in sight. The second option breaks the game, since you probably will kill someone relevant to the plot. So you end up with just one realistic playing option; hardly making it a role playing game. That's why I think Morrowind is more akin to an Adventure game (and a good one if you consider it that) and should be defined such by their advertisements, rather than an RPG.

An adventure game? Hardly. Adventure games have good writing, plots and dialog. Morrowind is just worthless.
If I want a really fucking good adventure game, I'll play any of the SCUMM games. If I want a really fucking good RPG, I'll play Fallout or Arcanum. If I want a really fucking good game with swordplay, I'll play Jedi Academy. I can't think of a reason to play Morrowind.

I never really digged the Jediknight games personally. Then, on the other hand I liked Morrowind, which I guess makes me look like a moron in your eyes.
The thing about dialogue is very correct Spazmo... When you described it a bit more, I understood what you meant. It is kinda like "Googledotcom: Enter Morrowind" or shit like that.
But I really enjoyed the item-fest and feeling of power after you had raised in ranks of all possible guilds (well, I never managed to join Thieves Guild but hey - because of some weird glitch I'm a member of two Great Houses). And of course the game was pretty, so it was sugar for sight.
The best part of it is, nevertheless, the availability of mods. Sucky dialogue? Download a 1-50 MB fan-made mod package and receive a totally new storyline, new islands, new characters, weapons etc. etc.
And some of those more quality made mods actually have dialogue that cuts out some options and opens new doors depending on your decisions and has choices, that *mean* something.
But I can't blame you, if you didn't like it. All those things you said that were lacking are true, but I personally overcame most of them and found Morrowind quit enjoyable.

I'm not into Star Wars, only two decent things came out of the films, lightsabers and Carrie Fisher in a Metal Bikini but I loved Jedi Outcast. Morrowind just ran like a pig on my machine it would be alright for a bit and then suddenly go into slowdown mode. Which wasn't handy if you were in combat. I think I uninstalled it and exchanged it for the From Dusk till Dawn game after the first fight I got into.

Believe it or not, some do. It's not really the drive (I think anyway, I'm not qualified to give an exact answer) but I have noticed a great deal of scratches on my games that use SecureRom, that copyright protection bullshit. If you play Neverwinter Nights, you'll notice the game checks for the CD several times as you play (I'm not talking about loading times) slowing the game to a crawl; and with all that spinning I've noticed my CD's have a few scratches. It's not with all games/CD drives though, usually a game's copy-protection is the cause of the scratches, because some brands of CD drives don't work well with the copy protection.Franz_Schubert wrote:cd-rom drives don't make scratches on cd's.
And as much as Lionheart blows (though for some reason I think it's an ok game), at least you don't need the CD in the drive to play (though it nearly takes 2 freaking gigs of my HD up). Is that a Black Isle Studio tradition or something? I noticed most (I don't know if all of them do) don't need a CD in the drive to play, which I think is a good thing. Copy protection usually only screws over the legit users, and doesn't stop the pros anyway.

i had a cd-rom that ate 3 of my brood wars cds.
ive got to agree with spazmo on morrowind. its combat is shit and the dialogue reads like a news report.
its like running around a boring pretty picture.
