The problem with Mieville is that he's a Peake and Lovecraft pastiche writer, and he injects his adolescent politics into everything, turning a great premise into shite.Naked_Lunch wrote:China Mieville's "Looking for Jake" was absolutely amazing though, specifically the title story, the graphic novel, and "Reports Of Certain Events In London." Very Lovecraft-esque. Good shit, mates.

Eww, I always wanted to try one of his books. I guess I won't, now.Mechanurgist wrote:The problem with Mieville is that he's a Peake and Lovecraft pastiche writer, and he injects his adolescent politics into everything, turning a great premise into shite.Naked_Lunch wrote:China Mieville's "Looking for Jake" was absolutely amazing though, specifically the title story, the graphic novel, and "Reports Of Certain Events In London." Well, Perdido Street Station and The Scar are both great beach books and definitely worth checking out if you have some time to spare, but I can't say the same for Looking for Jake. 2-3 decent stories ("Reports..", the wormwood one ~~) and a whole lot of crap. (I mean, what the hell was he thinking when he wrote An End to Hunger and 'Tis the Season? Some pretty massive lulz right there)S4ur0n27 wrote:Eww, I always wanted to try one of his books. Currently reading: Crash by JG Ballard. Very :dac:
I bought Crash, Concrete Island (I think that was the title?) and Crystal World. I read half of concrete island and all of crystal world - didn't get to Crash, but I did watch the movie.
His writing style is very... sparse? I donno, it obviously fits the subject matter wonderfully but it's also pretty depressing to read.

Really? I loved the Black Company series (well, at least until book 5 or 6). Can you tell me if the English translation is good?edhead wrote:The Witcher (Wiedzmin) by A. Sapkowski. Mothafucking awesome dark fantasy shit. Getting to the third installment of the series right now. Almost as awesome as Glen Cook's Black Company series.

If you mean conform to ZOG, too fucking bad, buster, that will never happen. Do you think I'm gonna sit by and let my white race be polluted into nothing while future generations are half-breeds and sick looking mongrel fucks that are nothing but Jew soldiers? Fuck that shit and fuck all weak minded Zionist cocksuckers who give me shit.S4ur0n27 wrote:Grow up

yeah, theyre pretty solid
i bought his commentaries on the gallic war and the eminently more depressing commentaries on the civil war. theyre both pretty short reads and are written in a very simple, direct, and entertaining style that you might enjoy. i sometimes wish he were more descriptive, but at the time of writing he pretty definitely had a different target audience in mind who would have been better informed about things that arent second nature to the modern man, so that explains the occassional want of details (composition of legionary engineer detachments, clearer description of roman artillery deployment etc)
there are three other extant works that are attributed to him (on his hispanic, african and alexandrine campaigns, respectively) but the historical record seems to indicate theyre forgeries and were not written by our man
