The most effective weapon on the battlefield is also the one that's most reliable. Technically the most effective weapon ever is the rock. It never fails, it's in plentiful supply and even if you manage to break it on someones head, you can still just use part of it or grab another one off the ground. So yes, I would say that a weapon that a soldier can always rely on would be the more effective one.

Especially if you can critically hit children in the groin with it.

I'd say it's the one that has the best mix of attributes. Accuracy, range, reliability, size, weight. No one thing makes any weapon great (AK excluded).

My friend is going into the body guard business and he needs a pistol. What would you all reccomend as a good self defense pistol? He was thinking about a .45 1911 or a FN Five-SeveN IOM.

1911. More straight out knockdown power which is what you want in my opinion. Then again, I'm more a purist when it comes to handguns.

Edit: It's also much easier to find rounds for. I've never really checked walmart for 5.7x28mm but something tells me it's more of a specialty round more than something used by Joe Bodyguard. .45 rounds are fairly cheap, can be found in almost any load, and are readily available.

Springfield xd 40 cal unless he really wants a 45...FBI uses glock 22 and 23 in 40 because it gives you the stopping power of a 45 but also nearly the mag size of a 9mm. He might also think about a revolver... 6 rounds no matter what, no chance of jamming.

Might want to consider either a Smith and Wesson M&P .45 if he's determined to go the .45 route because it's got a bigger capacity than a 1911 and it's lighter, but the H&K USP .40 Comp Carry is a good choice also because it's a carry gun.

the verry first round, its the best thing to do, the first shot is craps shot, and rat shot as the first rould will give him the advantage, i wont kill at a distance but it will hit the fucker and ruin the
targets aim on your body guard friend, the second shot should be a hollow point with cross cuts.

good advice...hadn't thought of that one. Used to seeing combat loads(if i recall...1st round fmj, then tracer, then hollow until tracer for second to last to show you only have one left.)

No, the ratshot wouldn't cycle the action so his first shot would have to be deadly and that would negate any advantage of an automatic.

don't see why it wouldn't cycle...hell...you could always load it hot worst case.
