Something I've been thinking about for a while, is vBullitin forum system... at http://www.vbulletin.com/. All major sites with forums use vBullitin over phpbb. Some random examples you can go and look at: somethingawful.com, evilavatar.com, obsidianent.com...
Unlike phpbb (which we use now), it's not free, but it's vastly more customisable, from little things like showing how many people are viewing each forum next to the forum's name on the forum index, and a load more powerful, not to mention a lot nicer for mods and admins to use (don't have to install faulty mods to merge topics...). Everything can be imported, so skins, usernames, posts, forums etc would stay, but it would enable us to have all the stats megatron wanted, and a lot of nice features that with phpbb we can't have. It's a lot easier getting it to look the way we want than it is with phpbb.
Anyway, if this was something we aimed for, it would be mainly through donation, and that would be about $5 from 30 people, which would buy the forum.
I'm interested in the opinions of people who know about forums, and their merits, and people who have used vbullitin, what they think of it, and finally, whether people would be willing to donate $5 towards this if it's something that was seen as a good thing.
vBullitin possibility
