Van Buren is missed

Post by Mr. Teatime »

<strong>[ Game -> Article ]</strong> - More info on <a href="http://wikipocalypse.duckandcover.cx/in ... le=Fallout 3 (Van Buren)">Game: Fallout 3 (Van Buren)</a>

<p><a target="_self" href="http://www.gamespot.com/features/613202 ... ">Gamespot have a new article up</a> about <strong>DEAD</strong> games, and this includes Van Buren (and TORN, for Black Isle fans):</p>
<blockquote>
<p><span class="gstext15"><em><strong>The Bright Side</strong>

</em>
<p><em>
Black Isle was never able to finish its seminal game, and so Fallout
fans were left feeling like they had gotten a 10 million Rad dose...for
a period of about seven months, anyway. In July 2004, Interplay
announced that it had auctioned off the Fallout license to Bethesda
Entertainment for a little more than a million dollars, as part of its
effort to regain solvency. Bethesda, the studio behind the hit Elder
Scrolls series of first-person RPGs, has had the Fallout 3 project
under its wing for a little more than a year now, and there have been
very few details on the game's progress to this point. In a GameSpot
interview, executive producer Todd Howard confirmed that Bethesda
intends to keep the flavor and humor of the series as intact as
possible, even though the new team has discarded Van Buren and started
over from scratch.</em> </p></span></p>
</blockquote>
<p><span class="gstext15"><p>One thing I did like about Van Buren was
the game engine - they got the look of the 2D games into a 3D engine.
I'm hoping (but not expecting) Bethsoft's Fallout 3 to use the same
look.

They could allso make is to you can chose. Its the best thing about 3d. If you want it isometric and in fps stile 3d you can have both.

Yeah, I remember how we sang and danced around the fountain of joy when Bethesda got the rights. :P

I'd assume there would be game mechanical issues of having both isometric and first person perspectives, like how to implement turn-based in first person. I don't think they will allow you to choose, although I could go with a combination of first person adventure and isometric combat.

does enyone seriously still believe this is possible? Ok, but it's a very slim chance, isn't it.

i doubt bethesda is going to go the isometric way. it would really be quite something if they managed to use some Morrowind-style engine to model a large nuked continent. The environment modellers who worked on morrowind did a great job getting a unique architectural feel for various parts of the gameworld. I'm sure they have the skills to model some Pripyat style abandoned buildings and such.

I was thinking something like the style in the Red Star comics.
Without the magic/etc. Lots of attention to lighting, textures, etc.
Still prefer isometric, though.

BTW, what is your avatar? Devo? Buckaroo Bonzia?

never heard of Red Star.
i'd be plain happy if they just stuck to the exact same style as fallout, be it isometric or 3d. it's just gotta have the same feel/look/universe.

and the avatar is from a Primus video: Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.

One thing I did like about Van Buren was the game engine - they got the look of the 2D games into a 3D engine. I'm hoping (but not expecting) Bethsoft's Fallout 3 to use the same look.
yarr, that vanbubren view was indeed well above what one had expected.
Unfortunately though, it'll all be cocks and asses from here meladdo. We wont get isometricish, no moving camera even.... It'll be a fixed over the shoulder view, with no skill rolls in combat which will be real-time point and click.
The game'll make you feel like an assfixated stalker, since all your attention will be on the ass of the (non customizable) main character coz his hip movement is weirdly exiting.

Talk all you want, dream and lie.
Just dont get your hopes up in any way, its all going to mouthrape land this is.
Why do we even bother?

Only that it will be built on Oblivion technology. I don't know exactly what that means for Fallout 3, but I'd be interested to see what the engine is capable of. The NWN engine was based on MDK2 technology; OK, a bad comparison, but still.

At least we can be sure Fallout 3 will have good soil erosion, whatever viewing dimension it's in.

I wish I could erode Betheseda's finances. Then again, in the wastes, I guess you WOULD have to watch out for the vultures.

Oh...back on topic..

Van Buren's Dead Dead Dead Dead Dead. Wish it would have been made and sent out, I would have bought it. But it's Dead!

Van Buren will be ready some day. Just keep your thoughts focused on this: Van Buren will be ready someday. Over and over again till you embrace this thought or go ape shit.
