SAM & MAX return!

Post by PiP »

I know some of you folks hold the dog & rabbit classic in high regard as I do, so this isl perhaps good and intersting news. Here's a snip:
EvilEmpire news wrote:Apparently Purcell, has signed an agreement with Telltale Games to create a new video game based on his wisecracking dog private detective and completely insane rabbit sidekick.
source

I think maybe this is newsworthy (I have a feeling lots of us loved the game, and there is no other 'news'), but than again it's neither Fallout-related nor post-apoc, so I'm putting this here instead of "submit news". If somebody thinks it can go on the front page - go ahead.

Thereby hangs a tale!

Some time ago, LucasArts announced sequels to both Full Throttle and Sam & Max Hit the Road. They released more info on FT2 at E3 some year, and it pretty much sucked horribly. They were turning away from a traditional adventure game and into some stupid action-adventure garbage ready to be ported to PS2. Fans were outraged because it was going to suck balls. So, they canned it.

Less information was released about Sam & Max 2 (called Sam & Max: Freelance Police), but there were a few renders that looked nice and a short trailer that was very promising--everyone was actually excited about this one. Unfortunately, the geniuses as LucasArts decided that the popular reaction to Full Throttle 2--the one that looked like shit--meant that people didn't want adventure games. So they canned S&M2 as well, and everyone wept tears of rage.

YEARS PASS! Our young hero grows into a man and--wait.

YEARS PASS! The deal Steve Purcell, original creator of the Sam & Max characters (in some comic books), signed with LucasArts a while ago finally expires. The rights to Sam & Max computer games return to Purcell, so he takes them to these Telltale Games fellows and they start working on this.

Everyone rejoices. Do it.

But you must.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

It shouldn't. Full Throttle was created internally at LucasArts by LA employees--it wasn't licensed. That means the rights to FT will stay with LA pretty much forever. Someone might buy them, but it'd surprise me.

Nothing surprises me anymore, and judging from that, I'd say it's in the clear. Afterall, we're in the age of sequels and spinoffs, thus it's plausible that someone'd be jewed enough to buy a concept that has 1) worked before 2) has a fanbase, and re-use it.

But would LA sell it? I very much doubt it.

But they wouldn't let anyone else capitalize over something they couldn't themselves capitalize on.

Like EA and Wasteland. IPLY tried to buy it, but EA wouldn't sell.

But didn't Fargo get it eventually? (Independently.)

Time to check the wiki.

If I would've rejoiced everytime I read Fallout 3 was in development, I would have died... of joy?

I hope they make a decent Full Throttle adventure too, and Maniac Mansion, and Grim Fandango, and Monk... no Monkey Island can die.
