Confessions of a Pirate
Do you guys feel guilty when you download, copy, pirate media? I feel guilty if i'm copying a really good movie and I'm not sure if I should buy it just because its a good movie. Sometimes I just get the "i dun giv a shat!" attitude and others time i'm like "but this is a good movie, it deserves something."
I don't know if i should buy all my favorite movies or just copy them? What do you guys think?

If I think that a movie costs too much, then I'm an evidence of marketing's failure to set a price that is acceptable to me. Therefore, I am being discounted by thm as an "acceptable loss", since they didn't bother to fight for my money.
So, do you think it would mattr to ANYONE if I pirate games and movies I can't bring myself to buy? It won't make a single bit of a difference.

I don't feel guilty for downloading music. It's pretty much the same if I put a tape in my radio and started recording songs. The only difference, ofcourse, is that I'm the DJ. The whole idea that we're robbing the music industry is fairly stupid to me as if someone makes a good cd, I buy it anyways. Additionally, artists still make alot of money doing concerts and where is it written that music artists have to make a shit ton of money anyways? I honestly think America has a problem in overpaying movie, music, and sports stars.
Movies I'm pretty iffy about cause people generally had to risk their lives for those stunts, so I'll download a movie only if I own it before hand and just forgot my DVD at home or something.
Games - Pretty much if a title is impossible to find. Sam and Max hit the road for example.

Music, I don't really download in the first place. And sometimes I go to concerts so that's something I guess. I don't download many games as half of the time I can't get them to work, so I just buy them eventually anyway.
Movies, it depends. A lot of the time they don't get released here for a while or I don't feel strongly enough about it to go to the cinemas and watch it, but feel curious anyway. And I like to download tv shows since the uk is about a year behind the u.s. with it's imports.

yeargh, I download ye e'reything I be want!
'cept I buy all the albums of Rammstein, and I occasionally buy games, I also payed a whole LOT of money for my copy of Fallout2, even though I don't use it to play with. I intend to buy some cd's of Einherjer, even if I allready have the songs rippped on me computar.
But I never get a bad feeling about pirating, nevarrgh.

Well I generally buy stuff from smaller companies, for example: JoWood titles in games, indy movies, garage band demos / albums...
Most record companies suck, because the artist gets like 1/10 of the CD's price if he's lucky, the rest goes to support the huge machinery behind all the marketing bullshit. And of course to buy the executive managers and record moguls a new patch of cocaine and two brand new Ferraris.
I don't generally bother to pay for games that aren't something magnificent OR they're coming from some big company like Electronic Arts. Mount&Blade is a good example where money is well put as well as smaller game houses from my country for example.
I don't really feel so bad about movies, since I'm paying for satellite channels already and if I download a movie I've propably seen it there already or I'm just taking a "false start", since almost all the mainstream movies end up being aired on (satellite) telly anyway.

Um... so? They still get paid the same, regardless of you buying it or not. They're not like the Tom Cruise - level superstars in the leading roles that get 12021490 kazillion dollars + 1% of the ticket box profits. And Tom Cruise doesn't do his stunts.Movies I'm pretty iffy about cause people generally had to risk their lives for those stunts
I buy all my games, but I don't play more than 4 or 5 games a year. Actually I haven't played at all since I started my studies and the last games I bought were made by small(russian) companies. Blame it on poor PC games supply or the fact that gaming isn't as fun as it used to be.
Also, I rent movies and don't give a fuck about music. I'm a really crappy consumer. Therefore I simply cannot bother to pirate anything, although I wouldn't have any moral issues doing it. I have nothing against big corporations. It's true that they make unoriginal low-risk products but it is the consumers' fault buying them. I would also sell my own feces if it would be profitable.

So - people actually risked their lives and possibly died to make said movie. It's not the fact they got paid or not, I could care less about that - I just think it's abit disrespectful to steal something that someone risked life and limb to complete. Stunt work is dangerous work and I do my best to show support to their union and them, which in this case means that I don't just steal their work.Um... so? Umm, ok, it's your issue.
Edit: if it really needs explaining, here goes the above one-liner: "Yeah, ok that is so fucking weird and completely illogical but hey, I accept that, it's your opinion and stuff since that's what this whole thread is all about, I hope we'll be through with this one so there won't be need for any additional posts referring to this."

Movies: I sometimes "try before I buy." If they're shitty movies, I pass. If they're good, I go buy it usually that same afternoon. Pornography is the exception. I will download the hell out of pornography with no intention to purchase.
Games: I don't download games. I don't play games.
Apps: I download apps constantly. Usually because I at one point purchased the software, and new versions came out that cost just as much to upgrade as the old version cost to purchase. Fuck you, Adobe. I got the Creative Suite about 6 years ago, and the next day the new edition was released. Was I able to return the software that was still in packaging and get the new version? No. :open eDonkey:
Music: As said by someone above in this thread. Downloading music is just like sticking a tape in the deck and recording the radio. I see no problems with downloading music, esp. since most bands got their start through bootlegs.

But think of the fluffers! And the stars who died in AIDS! It's disrespectful towards them! They all actually risked their lives and possibly died to make Barely Legal Housewives Gone Wild vol 9, which you then pirated and thus paid no homage towards their dangerous line of work.ExtremeRyno wrote:Pornography is the exception. No one dies in "gone wild" videos as there's no sex hence no risk dummy. There's only been rarely documented cases of AID's in porno so there's virtually no risk and the risk isn't the same as say.....being set on fire or say turning your car over. The difference is that stuntmen are purpousily payed to risk their lives, pron actors are paid to have sex. One possibly puts you in the hospital in a coma, the other possibly puts you in the hospital with sore hips.
If you see it the way you're putting it everyone risks their lives, but the significant potential for injury and risk for death is different between stunt work and acting, even porno "acting".

I really hate those Blockbuster assholes. They have these commercials with these horrible people who go "We'd rent movies overnight and then keep them for a week without watching them and then we'd return them and they'd tell us we have late fees and we'd go 'OMIGOSH that's CRAZY!' Now that Blockbuster has gotten rid of late fees, we just rent movies and never take them back IT'S GREAT!" I can't imagine what kind of horrible asshole does that kind of shit.

Not personally. And with anything you risk dying, you even die slowly while you do a job. I don't stay awake at night wondering about the moral dilemmas of the stunt men of the world who probably just get paid anyway if the movie does badly or not. And they do it anyway because they enjoy it perhaps, it's not being a soldier boy or something serious. You drive cars and jump into boxes. And they probably get overpayed anyway gosh darn it.Wolfman Walt wrote:Yes you do. You pay firecode taxes.
