I used to play guitar and I would say Eric Clapton, I am in no way a fan of his, I listen to mostly electronic music now (Funker Vogt) but I would say his stuff was the hardest to play.

But... there are much greater guitarists with not as big of a backing as the ones we have stated so I am sure someone else will give a better one.

Jimi Hendrix. Definitely.

Anyway, into the realm of indie --

Bob Mould Hüsker Dü - For having that patented fuzzy guitar tone. Amazing Amazing Amazing.

J. Mascis Dinosaur Jr. - Think trashy Neil Young with tenfold distortion and you're not even close.

Greg Ginn Black Flag - Hardcore mixed with metal, jazz, and pure noise.

Joey Santiago Pixies - Black Francis might have been the soul of this band, but Joey was definitelythe heart.

King Buzzo Melvins - After Gluey Porch Treatment was made, people should've just stopped trying for the "Heaviest Song" vibe; it had already been done.

Curt Kirkwood Meat Puppets - Country and Punk. Who'd a thunk?
This is my signature.

Jimi.
But Santana did some good stuff together with John Lee Hooker.
Runner-up: Poison Ivy from The Cramps. I mean, the bellyache after listening to "You got good taste" the first time lasted for hours.

Jimi is da shizzit!

However, there are many others who are almost as good. I would like to point out that rock is not the only genre where you can find good guitarists. But, let me give you a short short-list.

Jennifer Turner
Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Frank Zappa
James Taylor
Don Ross
Yngwe Malmsteen
Eric Johnson
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Roy Clark
Eddy VanHalen
Eric Clapton
Boz Scaggs
Duane Allman
Johnny Lang
Edgar Winter
Pete Townsend
Oscar Lopez
Duane Eddy
Ben Harper
The former artist, formerly known as Cat Stevens
Gordon Lightfoot
Michael Hedges
Keller Williams
Neil Young
Barrie Maguire
Russ Ballard
Van Morrison
Johnny Cash

Apologies go out to all those who got shafted, and ended up on the extended long-short-list

Hendrix not only because he was born and raised where i was born and where i live (seattle, wa) but because of his amazing sound. He was fricking amazing, tons of sounds, different vibes and he didnt even know how to write music like many other amazing musicians. Also he was only famous for 4 years... and look how he changed music.

If I actually knew him, he'd be the best guitar player I know. As it stands, my uncle George is the best guitar player I actually know. Or maybe my dad. He's pretty good, too. Me, hell... I suck. But I'm pretty good on brass. Yeah, yeah, I know : who asked (?).

Ever hear of anything by some dudes that go by the name Beautiful People? Man, hunt it down. If you dig Jimi, you very well might go ga ga over them.

Hmmm, Santana and Jimi definitely have a good spot.

Howver, and of modern note, I'd have to go with another strngs contortionist, Les Claypool (Primus, etc.). Sure, the songs are a bit out there, but the stringwork was impressive, as are the numbers of stringed instruments he knows. Ler is pretty good, too.

Remember, Primus Sucks.

I don't know who the "best" guitar player is, but my favorite would be Kirk Hammet. Dude kicks ass.

So I can only guess which part of EMP is your favorite :)
