I just got ToEE after seeing how much Circle of Eight accomplished, and it was only $9. Ok, so I install the game, then Patch 2, then the latest version of CO8. Everything is fine except when it plays a cutscene. The screen will stay black and sound skips violently, making them unwatchable. I discovered they are common BINK files which can be watched with no problems outside the game. Oh, and they play just fine if I set the ingame resolution to 16 bit. Is this a known problem? Because I have never seen this happen before.
Before anyone says check the forums, I did. There's no reference to it on the CO8 boards, Atari boards, or anywhere. I read of similar problems with Painkiller (which also uses BINK video) on the Dreamcatcher boards and the fixes are little more than magic fairy dust or clapping your hands and wishing really hard. I can live with playing in 16 bit or skip the cutscenes entirely while in 32 then switch back when they appear. It's just an unnecessary hassle.

I don't feel like dicking around with drivers when I know nothing is wrong. It runs perfectly fine now anyway.
Aside from that slight headache, I am really enjoying the game. I love the different starts based on alignment. I was briefly confused with how armor class is reversed. For some reason I was expecting AD&D rules, but it only took a couple seconds to switch. The whole thing reminds me so much when I was a little kid playing D&D with other kids in the neighborhood. I don't know what vanilla ToEE plays like and I don't want to know.
Everything the Baldur's Gate series I hated is fixed here. It sucks the engine is totally ignored except for the handful of people behind the Co8 mod. Although, my dream mod would be a Darksun remake. With no official editor support it'll have to stay a dream.
I do hate the tiny fucking portraits. Everything seems over-condensed to me. It's not that bad considering I could be stuck with a humongous interface. It is a bummer when Darksun got the player screens and inventory so perfect about 15 years ago. Those full body drawings were neat even if you couldn't chose them.
