First it looked interesting, then suddenly it went "HELLO. WELCOME TO ARCADE GAME!" -- why won't anyone take zombies seriously? Cannibal corpses, y'know, isn't that kind of serious? Pretty far from retarded npc population in Serious Sam 2 or chickens in Zelda. Ah fuck it -- good or not, it's console trash.

As wiser men ( than you ) have said:
Koki wrote:No.
Resident evil: junking about indoors with bonanza angles fighting scripted events and bits and pieces of zombies. Zombies aren't "horror", they're "terror" -- running down the street, with a throng of slow, creepy fuckers behind you, always thinking 20 minutes ahead; one mistake and you're dead. Re went into the "BUH! FUCKING SCARED YOU THERE!" thing pretty fast, as if zombies on their own aren't a creepy bunch, and then introduced a bunch of infected animals, overgrown serpents, flowerheads and mutated pirahna fish, not to mention puzzles having nothing to do with zombies. I don't mind the game, re1 still creeps me out ( with the blue box-zombies ), but it's, as you put it, horror -- not "zombie".

An open enviroment, a dumb "Oooh go and fetch that guy" ai, as non-scripted plotline as possible, rare gunbattles ( why waste ammo when you can run? ) and we're a bit on the way to taking zombies "seriously". Generally speaking, it's post-apoc survivor genre.

But no. Instead we get either "arcade shooter", "horror that spawns in behind you" or "hoho, zombies are pure comedy, let's make a humorous game".

I watched the trailer yesterday, surprisingly enough, it was all about killing as many zombies as you possibly could. Didn't look hard at all. In the RE series, if you went face to face with 5 zombies and were unprepared, things could have turned very ugly, not even mentioning the ammo shortage, etc especially inherent in RE1.

In Dead Rising, why the hell would you even get hold of a gun, if you can slaughter 15 zombies in one move (prolly some stupid button combination on the stick, or whatever you call them) with a garden hose? It's so pointless. You probably have like bonus moves and extra melee weapons (Super Turbo Chainsaw) that you can unlock if you kill enough.

Not my cup of tea.

I think the only way to have a serious zombie game is for it to be arcadish, toxic. Of course you could have like a survival type game but what game has actually done that well? It either becomes survival horror or just horror. Sure you could dream up some game you always wanted but it most likely won't happen and this shit is the closest you will get to it. Stop being a bitch.

the guns are good for doing things quicker, but since there's a lack of ammo and it's usually overkill you have a bunch of hand to hand stuff anyway, but it's more fun. it's an alright game, ive only played the demo at my friends.

how would you like a zombie game to play out? in more or less every zombie movie the people get killed because of the actions of other humans, the zombies are just there really. if dead rising had the impeding doom or whatever of shuffling about, I don't know. I think it's just more fun to kill shit in a game, why have zombies as some enclosing wall? Just be original perhaps. Or not even that, there's a ton of other monsters that'd fit the criteria of a lurching horror that actually has a bit more endurance to fulfil the criteria I guess.

Zombies are usually just going to be weak enemies that you bish about in games. Just like a mass of any other enemies in any other game, like the guards in metal gear solid.

But then it's not really serious is it? It's actually pretty silly, with scores jumping out and unlockable gear and "WOOH YOU KILLED 5 IN ONE SHOT" signs blinking above your characters head.
POOPERSCOOPER wrote:Of course you could have like a survival type game but what game has actually done that well?
Well, the zombie mod in operation flashpoint works well, and there were a couple of fancy schmancy missions made for it too. At the same time, ofp wasn't really designed for that kind of gameplay.
POOPERSCOOPER wrote:It either becomes survival horror or just horror.
Yeah, I said that in my previous post.

What about that City of the Dead game? I think they're on par in being lame.
Bad plot wrote:"City of the Dead" begins as four desperate survivors escape a ravaged zombie infested city by helicopter. After making it to the remote island of Isla Mortal, an accident destroys their only means of escape. Unbeknown to them the island is home to a top secret military installation, overrun by the walking dead. Armed with an arsenal of traditional and futuristic weaponry, players must battle the living dead from dusk 'till dawn in series of abandoned locales.
EDIT:
More worthless City of the Dead bullshit wrote:Adding to the arcade feel, players can earn points the more they kill. Shoot several zombies in succession and the screen displays “double kill and awards the player more points :).
I'll vote for this one, thanks to pc and coop support, not to mention that both its' sites are down and it might be canceled or something LOWL.

A) One bite from a zombie and you're dead.
2) Nearly every resident of the city you're in is a zombie. Sure, one zombie vs a bullet to the head is mince meat, but an army of those little rascals is akin to taking on Korea on your own.
Pi) To ensure survival, you need to get from your current position X to position Y.

I'd groan a bit before embarking on this mission. This isn't a piece of cake situation, this is like Norway 67 all over again.

Now now, are you going with RE virus like infection? Virus like infections would suck, you'd get a damn scratch and game over. And a bite itself isn't lethat enough to kill, unless you bite throat or something, and that's only what intelligent person/animal would do. Zombies are neither.

I'd like zombies to be:

1) Dumb. Able only to move in and try to eat you. Now this is important, it will try to EAT you, so arms used only for grabbing. Legs for walking. No karate zombies.
2) Resilient. 3-4 .45s to the chest and it's still walking? That's like, the symbol of zombieism. Destroying the brain is lethal though.
3) Slow, unagile, uncoordinated. No running in hallways.
4) Strong. Very strong. When they get too close, it might be over.

How else would one explain a billion zombies roaming around? "Oh it's no bother, let him nibble your arm for a bit. It's not like it SPREADS AROUND." I'd accept, like, 2-3 "lucky dodges" where the character barely evades the bite, but mixing blood with a zombie means you'll soon be one. Otherwise, nice points.

There is no difference GODAMNIT MOVIES ARE SERIOUS AND GAMES ARE TOO. FUCK WHY EVEN HAVE A HEALTH BAR IT"S SO UNREALISTIC NOT IMMERSIVE LIKE SLIPPING INTO A HOT BATH.

RE4 has maybe some of the type of gameplay toxic mentioned but on a lot smaller scale. You have to run around and try not to get swarmed by zombies, shoot then run and stuff.
