Just downloaded and starting again. Last time I played, I didn't do very well. Any suggestions?

Suggestions ? Myriad. However, your actions here heavily imply that they would be wasted upon one such as you, Prater.

Get out.

Well, that one's for JA2 (which I've never played). I last played JA a long, long time ago (I used to have the demo, while it still used to be hot shit).

Hire Ivan, Fidel and Fox and you're set, Ice is also nice to have around.
"It" is good at opening boxes and doors with a crowbar, Jimmy Upton is a good alternative for the start with lockpicks, Mike is overall awesome in the late game.
Generally look for high Agility, Health and Dexterity in your mercs, since that determines their action points, the higher the better.
regarding combat, keep your group together, duck and cover, hide behind trees and shoot the enemy

Horrendous.
Not so, not so.
And so ! The holes call and gravitate unerringly toward your spastic hypothesis, dear pIp.
So little, so much.
