Ummm, well, ahem. I never really completed the game. The farthest I got was in Base Cochise and that was with a walkthrough in one hand.....

First time through, I got through fine.. Second time, though, I didn't even get to Cochise- I got stuck in Finster's brain..

I made it out alive... the key was to have all 4 parties meet at "halfway" points and merge and all take the escape pod together... there was plenty of time to get

I think you can have some die and some survive.
In the Base Cochise endgame segment, that is.
Too bad you can only get the xp for it once.
I tried using a copy of the disk and it was all good until that end part.
No xp-mining.
